Ed Sheeran is the clearest answer: he is a lifelong Ipswich Town supporter whose connection includes match visits, past shirt sponsorship and a minority stake in the club. Other reported celebrity fans include musicians Tom Chaplin and Charlie Simpson, comedian Omid Djalili and—on the strength of a single reported comment—Will Ferrell. The late Chester Bennington was a historical supporter.
Ed Sheeran: Ipswich Town’s best-known supporter
Sheeran’s support is unusually visible, and ITV News Anglia described him as a standout among the club’s famous fans. ITV News Anglia’s 2024 report and BBC Sport’s coverage document several distinct ties to the club.
- A lifelong fan: Sheeran has supported Ipswich Town since childhood.
- Shirt sponsor: He became the club’s main shirt sponsor in 2021. The original agreement covered the 2021–22 season and the men’s and women’s teams; that history does not establish whether sponsorship continues in a later season. The Guardian reported the original deal.
- Minority shareholder: In August 2024, he acquired a 1.4% stake. BBC Sport described it as a passive minority investment; he did not join the club’s board.
- Matchday presence: Sheeran has attended games. After a 2023 match, he joined players for a dressing-room singalong. Manager Kieran McKenna said: “He’s an important part of the football club, we really appreciate his support, and it was great to have him here tonight.” ITV News Anglia reported the visit.
Explaining his investment in an interview reported by BBC Sport on 15 August 2024, Sheeran said: “It’s any football fan’s dream to be an owner of the club they support, and I feel so grateful for this opportunity.”
Why “Sheeran 17” is associated with the club
The number 17 refers to Sheeran’s 17 February birthday. BBC Sport reported in 2025 that the club had used him as its number 17 in several seasons, except during the 2024–25 Premier League campaign. The report also said shirts bearing “Sheeran 17” were the club’s most popular across the four seasons it covered. That is historical sales information, not confirmation of current stock or availability.

Other reported Ipswich Town celebrity supporters
ITV News Anglia’s 2024 report names several other famous people who follow Ipswich. The evidence and detail differ, so these connections should not be treated as equal in depth or current activity.
- Tom Chaplin: The Keane lead singer was identified as an Ipswich follower. The report provides less detail about his attendance or the extent of his support than it does for Sheeran.
- Charlie Simpson: The Busted musician was also identified as a supporter. He grew up in Woodbridge, but that local connection alone does not establish the depth or current activity of his support.
- Omid Djalili: ITV described the comedian as a regular at Portman Road after he moved to Suffolk.
- Will Ferrell: ITV reported that the actor once named the Tractor Boys as his club during an interview in Miami. That single comment is weaker evidence than a record of regular attendance or long-term support.
A notable historical supporter: Chester Bennington
Chester Bennington, the late Linkin Park frontman, supported Ipswich as a teenager after his father introduced him to the club, according to ITV News Anglia’s 2017 report. Ipswich Town paid tribute after his death that year. Bennington belongs in the club’s history of notable supporters, rather than a list of current fans.
