Apple’s Media Player framework gives third-party media apps a way to provide it, but each service must build the feature and supply compatible artwork. The API’s availability does not mean Spotify, YouTube Music, Deezer, Tidal, or every other service supports it.
What animated artwork looks like in iOS 26
While audio is playing, compatible Apple Music artwork can expand into an animated, full-screen Lock Screen presentation. Apple says users can enter that view by tapping the artwork in the Lock Screen music controls. The feature sits within the broader iOS 26 interface redesign.
Animation depends on the media item having compatible artwork; it is not a promise that every track will move. When animated artwork is unavailable or animation cannot be shown, the system can display a still image instead. Apple introduced the experience in its iOS 26 announcement.
Can Spotify and other streaming services use it?
Technically, yes. Apple documents MPMediaItemAnimatedArtwork in its Media Player framework and explains how apps can supply animated artwork to system surfaces, including the Lock Screen. That creates an implementation path for third-party music apps, as well as other media-player apps. It does not make the feature exclusive to Apple Music at the framework level.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
There are three separate requirements behind the user-facing result:
- Apple provides the system capability: the framework accepts animated artwork through now-playing information.
- The app implements it: its developers must integrate the API and provide suitable assets.
- The current media can use it: the item needs compatible artwork, and the device and system conditions must allow animation.
As of the reporting and Apple documentation cited here, specific production support by Spotify, YouTube Music, Deezer, Tidal, or Amazon Music is not verified. Contemporary coverage described third-party adoption as possible, not as a confirmed rollout by those services. See Tech Times, Digital Music News, and Business Standard. API access alone is not evidence that a particular app has shipped the feature.

What an app has to provide
Apple’s API is not simply an animated JPEG or GIF field. An app creates an MPMediaItemAnimatedArtwork object that associates a preview image with a video asset. Through MPNowPlayingInfoCenter, it supplies that object under one or both supported artwork keys: MPNowPlayingInfoProperty1x1AnimatedArtwork for square art and MPNowPlayingInfoProperty3x4AnimatedArtwork for tall art. The app should query the platform’s supported keys rather than assume both formats are available.
The preview should match the video’s first frame. It can appear while the video loads and when conditions call for a still image. The video asset handler must return a local file URL, not a remote streaming URL. An app may download the video when the system requests it, save it locally, then return that file’s URL. Apple says the system requests artwork asynchronously and only when it is needed for a display context, so downloading every animation in advance is unnecessary.

Apple’s implementation guidance recommends a short clip, preferably under 30 seconds, a clean loop, and a frame rate no higher than 60 fps. It also advises returning previews quickly, caching assets for later requests, and avoiding undue delay in supplying the local video URL; its documentation warns that the system may time out that request after 30 seconds. These are Apple’s recommendations and failure-prevention guidance, not a claim that every recommendation is a universal hard limit.
An artwork identifier represents the identity of both the preview and video. If either asset changes, the app should create a new animated-artwork object with an updated identifier so the system knows to request the replacement. Any local video file must remain valid for as long as its artwork object remains in the app’s now-playing information.

A simplified Swift pattern
This example illustrates the handoff; an app still needs to implement its own asset lookup, download, caching, error handling, and static-art fallback.
let animatedArtwork = MPMediaItemAnimatedArtwork(
artworkID: song.artworkID,
previewImageRequestHandler: { _ in
song.previewFrame
},
videoAssetFileURLRequestHandler: { _ in
let localURL = assetStorage.url(for: song.artworkID)
do {
try await song.downloadVideo(to: localURL)
return localURL
} catch {
return nil
}
}
)
let supportedKeys = MPNowPlayingInfoCenter.supportedAnimatedArtworkKeys
var info: [String: Any] = [
MPMediaItemPropertyTitle: song.title,
MPMediaItemPropertyAlbumTitle: song.albumTitle
]
if supportedKeys.contains(MPNowPlayingInfoProperty1x1AnimatedArtwork) {
info[MPNowPlayingInfoProperty1x1AnimatedArtwork] = squareArtwork
}
if supportedKeys.contains(MPNowPlayingInfoProperty3x4AnimatedArtwork) {
info[MPNowPlayingInfoProperty3x4AnimatedArtwork] = tallArtwork
}
MPNowPlayingInfoCenter.default().nowPlayingInfo = info
Apple’s detailed instructions are in Providing animated artwork for media items, with the object documented as MPMediaItemAnimatedArtwork. The initializer’s identifier and request-handler behavior is documented here.

Why animation may not appear
A still image is not necessarily a sign that the iPhone or app is broken. Apple documents several conditions under which the preview or static artwork may be used instead of video, including Low Power Mode, Low Data Mode, high thermal load, Reduce Motion, and disabled auto-play for animated images.
- The app may not have implemented Apple’s API.
- The current song or media item may not have an animation asset.
- The app may not have supplied a compatible aspect ratio or a valid local video file.
- The system may be showing the preview while the video loads, or may be suppressing motion under current settings or device conditions.
Apple documents 1:1 and 3:4 artwork variants. If the supplied preview or video does not match the expected aspect ratio for its key, the system may ignore the animated version and use static artwork. Users can check an app’s release notes or support announcements for feature availability, but changing device settings cannot add support to an app that has not implemented the API.
Implementation trade-offs for streaming services
Apple’s API requirements have practical product and engineering consequences, although the following are implications rather than separate Apple mandates:
- Bandwidth and storage: video assets consume more data and local space than still covers, so on-demand delivery and caching matter.
- Fast, reliable delivery: slow preview or video handling can delay the animated presentation or leave the system with a still image.
- Catalog operations: a service needs to associate each animation with the correct media item and manage square and tall variants where relevant.
- Rights and asset supply: services need suitable animation files and permission to distribute them.
- Accessibility and device behavior: the experience must accommodate motion preferences and conditions where the system chooses not to play the video.
Because Apple describes the API in terms of media items and system media views, it could also be relevant to compatible podcast or audiobook apps. That is a technical possibility, not evidence that a particular podcast or audiobook service has deployed animated Lock Screen art.

Third-party support status
Apple Music is the first-party example associated with the iOS 26 feature. For other named services, the sources cited in this article do not verify a production implementation or provide a confirmed rollout date. The distinction matters: Apple has opened an API path, while adoption and catalog coverage remain app-by-app questions.
