Did Interstellar beat Kraven the Hunter?
No—not in the two directly comparable December measures available here. The Associated Press reported estimated North American grosses for December 13–15, 2024, while Box Office Mojo lists domestic totals for the full month. Both put Kraven the Hunter ahead.

The weekend figures are estimates for North America; the monthly figures are domestic totals, not worldwide grosses. Neither supports saying Interstellar nearly beat Kraven in those periods. A comparison needs a stated window and metric: an opening weekend, a later weekend, a monthly total, or an IMAX-only figure are not interchangeable.
What happened when Interstellar returned?
The anniversary engagement
IMAX’s listing described a 10th-anniversary limited engagement beginning December 6, 2024, in select theaters, with 70mm IMAX and IMAX Digital presentations. The listing also notes that the film was shot with IMAX film cameras.

The opening weekend
The Associated Press reported that the re-release took in approximately $4.5 million from 166 screens in the United States and Canada over its December 6–8 opening weekend. Its December 10 account said the 10 film screens had an average of about $70,000 per theater. It also reported that 70mm IMAX presentations sold out within minutes. Those figures describe a concentrated run across a limited number of locations; the screen average is not a nationwide average or a controlled comparison between IMAX and other formats.
The AP also reported that resale tickets were reaching as much as $300. That is a reported resale-market price, not the standard ticket price for the engagement.

What the IMAX numbers show—and what they do not
The sellouts and reported screen averages make IMAX a conspicuous part of the revival. IMAX Corporation’s fourth-quarter 2024 results listed Interstellar at $20 million in IMAX box office. That is IMAX’s reported receipts for the quarter, not the film’s complete worldwide re-release gross, and it should not be compared directly with a domestic weekend estimate or monthly total.
Together, the format-specific demand reported by the AP and IMAX’s quarterly figure support the view that IMAX was an important draw. They do not establish how much of the re-release’s performance was caused by IMAX rather than the anniversary event, audience interest in the film, limited screening capacity, or other factors. The evidence demonstrates strong interest in the format, not a measured causal effect.

What the people involved said
As quoted by the AP, director Christopher Nolan said, “I was just so gratified by the response.” IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said, “We saw this coming from the beginning,” and described the result as reminiscent “in a small way” of the excitement around Oppenheimer, adding that it was “far beyond our expectations.” These comments convey the filmmakers’ and exhibitor’s reactions; they are not independent measurements of what drove ticket sales.
How to read the “almost beats” claim
The headline phrasing can suggest a close contest, but no single, unqualified comparison supports it. Kraven was ahead of Interstellar in both the December 13–15 North American estimates and the December domestic totals. The re-release’s opening-weekend screen average and IMAX’s quarterly receipts answer different questions, so they cannot be used to claim a near-win against Kraven.
The more precise takeaway is that a decade-old film attracted notable demand during a limited anniversary engagement, with sold-out 70mm IMAX presentations and a substantial IMAX-reported quarter. That is evidence of a strong premium-format revival—but not evidence that Interstellar almost beat Kraven the Hunter across the box office.
