Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s adobe-style estate near Calabasas was described by Architectural Digest in 2011 as a 25,000-square-foot house on 150 acres. The often-repeated $42 million figure is not a confirmed sale price or a verified current valuation: the Los Angeles Times reported it in 2013 as a whisper-listing asking price, while the couple said they were not selling.
Where is Will Smith’s mansion?
The estate is in the Santa Monica Mountains near Calabasas, in the Los Angeles area. The Los Angeles Times characterized it as Calabasas-adjacent; Architectural Digest described the ranch as near Calabasas. Those descriptions establish the general area, not an exact address.
Architectural Digest’s 2011 feature described a 150-acre parcel assembled from adjacent plots. Among the attractions of the land were a man-made lake and views toward Saddle Peak.
Is the mansion really worth $42 million?
The figure has a specific history. In 2013, the Los Angeles Times reported that a whisper listing put the asking price at $42 million. The same report said the couple were not selling and quoted a representative saying they were staying put. It did not report a sale.

Architectural Digest later called the compound a $42 million property in a 2021 portfolio article. That retrospective description does not establish a completed transaction or a present-day market valuation. No current valuation, listing, sale record, or occupancy confirmation is established by those reports.

Who designed the house?
The project brought together architect Stephen Samuelson and architect Harry Perez-Daple, with interiors by Judith Lance. The Smiths consulted designer Waldo Fernandez before Lance shaped the interiors.

In Architectural Digest’s account, the collaboration began to take shape after the couple contacted Samuelson; in 1997, they acquired a ranch near Calabasas and then purchased neighboring plots. The four-year building-permit process preceded construction, which began in 2003. The site was environmentally sensitive and subject to complex regulations; the landscape was regraded to its natural topography, with areas previously leveled for equestrian use restored.
What does the estate look like inside?
Adobe influences and handmade materials
The two-story house curves around a motor court. Samuelson described its historical references as interpretations of adobe from Persian, Moroccan, Spanish, and Southwestern American cultures. The reported material palette includes hand-troweled plaster, ceiling timbers salvaged from old homesteads and barns, hammered wrought-iron banisters, and river stones arranged in spiral and infinity-knot patterns.

The interiors continue the emphasis on collected and crafted details. Architectural Digest reported antique carved panels, doors, and architectural fragments gathered from the Middle East, Africa, the American Southwest, and Asia. The monumental front door had previously been used at a fort in northern India.
Custom details throughout
Among the distinctive pieces described in the 2011 feature were a living-room fireplace screen made of copper mesh, hand-hammered bronze, and carnelian; custom brass-wire sconces; a bronze-and-leather chandelier strung with rock-crystal beads; and a master-suite canopy formed from small ball chains suspended from bronze links. Because the architecture curves, furniture had to be tailored to fit. Lance summed up the constraint: “Nothing here came off the shelf.”

How was a 25,000-square-foot house meant to feel intimate?
The plan’s scale was balanced with curves, nooks, and alcoves rather than a sequence of long, straight corridors. Smith described the circulation idea simply: “The idea was no dead ends.” Architectural Digest presented that layout as part of the effort to make a large house feel connected and inviting.
The couple framed the estate as a family retreat tied to the land. Pinkett Smith called the home “a spiritual endeavor” and said, “We wanted to create a family retreat, something made by hand and as natural as possible, something that ties back to the land.” Smith likewise said, “Everything needed to be done by hand,” and that they wanted to “feel the love and labor that went into every piece of this place.”

What the $42 million story does—and does not—say
The most reliable way to describe the price is as a reported 2013 asking-price figure, later repeated in Architectural Digest’s 2021 coverage. The available reports do not show that the home sold for $42 million, and they do not establish its current market value or current occupants. Architectural Digest’s 2021 article also refers to other Smith properties and assets, including a Hidden Hills house, a Kauai property, and the custom movie trailer The Heat; those are separate from this Calabasas-area estate.
