But relatives cannot end a court-ordered guardianship on their own. The arrangement began in 2022 after Wells Fargo raised concerns about Williams’s finances. The underlying court record is sealed, so public reporting does not reveal the full evidence or the court’s reasoning. The latest status report located, dated August 21, 2026, said the guardianship remained in place; no later change was confirmed in reporting available through October 3, 2026.
Why was Wendy Williams placed under guardianship?
In 2022, Wells Fargo raised concerns about Williams’s financial affairs, alleging that she was incapacitated and vulnerable to undue influence or financial exploitation. A New York court then placed her under a guardianship and appointed attorney Sabrina Morrissey.
The detailed guardianship documents are sealed. That means the public cannot independently review the evidence presented to the court, the precise terms of the order, or the court’s full explanation for imposing it. News accounts of the dispute describe the parties’ public statements, not the complete record before the judge.
Morrissey’s attorney told ABC News that the guardian could not respond to multiple public claims because the case was sealed, denied wrongdoing, and said the guardian’s activities were supervised by the court: “…all of the court-appointed Guardian’s activities are regulated and supervised by the Court.”

What do Williams and her relatives say about the arrangement?
Williams herself has publicly opposed the guardianship. In a January 16, 2025 interview on The Breakfast Club, quoted by The Guardian, she said, “This system is broken, this system that I’m in,” and, “I am not cognitively impaired. But I feel like I’m in prison.” Those are Williams’s statements about her experience and capacity, not a court ruling.
Her niece Alex Finnie has also spoken in favor of Williams. Finnie told The Guardian that she had seen her aunt in a limited capacity and said, “My aunt sounds great.” Finnie also said the family could not call Williams directly, although Williams could call them, and that Williams did not have personal internet-connected devices. These are Finnie’s reported descriptions; the sealed order’s terms are not publicly available to verify the details or explain them.

The family’s concerns also appeared in the 2024 Lifetime documentary Where Is Wendy Williams? The Associated Press reported that relatives said a third party managed Williams’s finances and medical care and that they could not see her or have a say in treatment. Their accounts show why some relatives object, but they do not establish that every relative shares the same position or that the court accepted those claims.
What is known about Williams’s diagnosis and capacity?
Williams’s representatives announced in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. Williams later publicly disputed claims that she was cognitively impaired. In February 2025, ABC News reported that, after Williams questioned her diagnosis publicly, the guardian asked the court for another medical evaluation.

The public accounts do not provide the sealed court record or a complete set of medical evaluations. A diagnosis announcement, Williams’s public statements, and a new evaluation request are not by themselves a complete account of her medical condition or a determination of her legal capacity. The court’s evidentiary record remains unavailable for public review.
Can Williams’s family get her released?
Relatives can speak publicly, advocate for Williams, and pursue legal avenues available to them, but they cannot simply cancel a court order. Any termination or change to the guardianship would have to be addressed through the court process. ABC News reported in February 2025 that Williams’s court-appointed attorney planned to seek termination; that report did not establish whether the request was filed or how the court ruled.

The distinction matters: advocacy, a reported plan to request termination, a medical-evaluation request, and a court order are different things. Public statements or a lawsuit do not themselves release Williams from the guardianship.

They are separate legal disputes. The guardian brought litigation on Williams’s behalf concerning the Lifetime documentary. In July 2026, TMZ reported that Morrissey and A&E had resolved that documentary dispute. That reported settlement concerned the documentary case; it does not establish that the guardianship ended or changed.

Hunter’s June 2025 federal filing was also separate. He challenged the legitimacy of the guardianship and sought to act on Williams’s behalf as her “next friend.” His lawsuit and its allegations should not be treated as a ruling on the guardianship or as proof that Williams authorized him to represent her.
Is Wendy Williams still under guardianship?
The latest status report located was dated August 21, 2026. It quoted Williams at a public outing saying, “I want out!” and reported that no end to the guardianship had been announced by then. No later reliable report or accessible guardianship docket confirming a change was located through October 3, 2026. That is a dated account of the public record, not a docket-verified ruling on the arrangement’s status after that date.
