Val Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014. He later said he recovered from the cancer, but treatment and tracheotomies left his voice impaired and made communication—and acting—more difficult. He continued to work and tell his story, including through the documentary Val. Kilmer died in Los Angeles on April 1, 2025, at 65; the Associated Press reported pneumonia as the cause of death, not throat cancer.

What happened to Val Kilmer’s health?

The public account begins with a throat cancer diagnosis in 2014. Later reporting describes chemotherapy and radiation as part of his treatment, as well as tracheotomies. The Associated Press specifies two tracheotomies; The Washington Post describes multiple procedures. The reports do not provide a verified cancer subtype, stage or complete clinical timeline, so those details should not be inferred.

Kilmer recovered from the cancer, but the effects of treatment remained visible in his speech and communication. In his own account, the lasting voice impairment followed the radiation and chemotherapy, while the tracheostomy also made speaking and working challenging. The Associated Press’s obituary and The Washington Post’s obituary report on his diagnosis and procedures.

How did cancer treatment affect his voice and work?

Kilmer spoke publicly about the gap between how he felt and how he sounded. In an ABC interview aired in 2020, he said, “I’m doing great, I feel a lot better than I sound.” He also described learning to communicate with his tracheostomy as a distinctive challenge. ABC reported that the changes made communication and work difficult, but not impossible.

His impaired speech did not end his creative work or public communication. He continued acting and found ways to convey his experiences, including by writing and using other people’s voices to share his words. His account is one person’s experience; the reporting does not establish a general prognosis or show that every person with throat cancer treatment will have the same effects. ABC News’s account includes his interview reflections on his health and communication.

How did Kilmer tell his own story in Val?

The 2021 documentary Val draws on footage Kilmer filmed over many years. ABC News Australia reported that it was compiled from more than 800 hours of footage. Kilmer’s son, Jack, narrates the film, including written words that describe his recovery and the lasting effect of treatment: “I was recently diagnosed with throat cancer, though I healed quickly from the cancer. The extensive radiation and chemotherapy that followed treatment has left my voice impaired.”

The documentary offers a first-person perspective on the illness and its place in Kilmer’s life and career. His 2020 memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, is another source for his account; The Washington Post reported that he wrote about cancer’s impact on speaking. ABC News Australia’s report on Val describes the film’s archive and narration.

When did Val Kilmer die, and what was the reported cause?

Kilmer died in Los Angeles on April 1, 2025, at age 65. His daughter Mercedes confirmed his death. The Associated Press reported pneumonia as the cause. The accounts cited here do not establish that his earlier throat cancer caused the pneumonia, so the two should not be presented as a proven causal chain. The Associated Press reported the cause of death and his prior cancer history.
