Sixteen people were killed, usually couples in secluded places. Although Pietro Pacciani was convicted at trial and Mario Vanni and Giancarlo Lotti were later convicted in connection with four of the killings, the case’s legal history did not establish one person as responsible for all eight attacks.
What happened in the Monster of Florence case?
Between 1968 and 1985, eight couples were attacked in isolated locations around Florence. Rai News describes the victims as young couples who had sought privacy. Several female victims were mutilated. The series claimed 16 lives in total, according to Rai News and the BiblioToscana catalog record for the 1994 judgment.
“Monster of Florence” became the media label for the case; it was not the name of a person whose responsibility for all eight double homicides was conclusively established. The recurring pattern and the long, disputed investigation gave the label its force, but the label itself should not be mistaken for a legal finding.
How did the investigation and court cases unfold?
| Date or period | What the record says |
|---|---|
| 1968–1985 | Eight double homicides took place around Florence. Rai News and the BiblioToscana catalog record describe the series. |
| 1 November 1994 | Pietro Pacciani was convicted at first instance and sentenced to life imprisonment for seven of the eight double homicides attributed to the Monster. The BiblioToscana catalog identifies the date of the Court of Assizes judgment; Rai News recounts the proceedings. |
| 1996 | An appellate court acquitted Pacciani. Italy’s Court of Cassation annulled that acquittal and ordered a new appeal trial. |
| 1998 | Pacciani died before the ordered new appeal could take place, leaving no final conviction against him for the killings. |
| Later proceedings | Mario Vanni and Giancarlo Lotti were convicted in connection with four double homicides. Lotti had confessed to participating and testified against alleged accomplices; the BiblioToscana catalog and reporting describe a complicated procedural record. |
The sequence matters: Pacciani’s 1994 conviction was overturned, and the appeal court’s acquittal was itself annulled, but the new trial never occurred because he died. The first-instance verdict therefore cannot accurately be described as a final conviction.

Was the Monster of Florence ever identified?
The court outcomes do not support a simple claim that one identified killer was legally established as responsible for all eight double homicides. Vanni and Lotti were convicted in connection with four; Pacciani’s case ended without a final conviction. Treccani’s historical overview says that three of the eight double homicides still had no culprit identified in its account.
Treccani also reports that an archival order closed the last inquiry in 2020 but did not prevent reopening if new evidence emerged. That describes the status in the overview, not a guarantee that no later development could occur. The available accounts support a clear broad chronology, but not a definitive resolution tying every killing to one person.

What is known about the weapon and other theories?
Corriere’s case timeline says the .22-caliber Beretta associated with the case was never recovered. That is a notable feature of the investigation, but it does not by itself identify a perpetrator or settle the contested parts of the case.
Occult or commissioned-murder explanations circulated as theories. TIME’s October 22, 2025 feature reports that these theories were never substantiated. They should not be presented as established motives or findings.

How should viewers separate the history from dramatization?
Accounts of the case have differed, and a dramatic adaptation necessarily organizes events into scenes and a narrative. That can make a complicated record easier to follow, but dialogue, characterization, and the choice to emphasize one theory are not proof of what happened.
In a TIME interview, series co-creator and director Stefano Sollima said: “When we read the material, we realized the story had been told in many different ways by different people.” He added that it was “extremely difficult for us to organize without embracing one version or thesis rather than another.” His comments describe the challenge of adapting conflicting accounts; they are not a new finding about the crimes.

- A court judgment or cataloged legal record establishes what a court decided, not necessarily every disputed historical fact.
- A journalist’s reconstruction can add context, but allegations and investigative theories remain distinct from verdicts.
- A later retrospective may summarize the case from a different point in time than contemporaneous reporting.
- An adaptation is a dramatic interpretation, not an independent source of evidence.
