Spoilers for the ending of Inside Out 2. Anxiety gets the better of Riley temporarily, but she is neither defeated nor erased. In the hockey-game climax, Riley’s effort to impress the older players spirals into a panic attack. The ending is about her emotions making room for one another—not about Joy switching Anxiety off.
What happens at the end of Inside Out 2?
Riley has been changing her behavior to fit in with the older hockey players and impress Coach Roberts. What begins as a bid to belong becomes increasingly pressured: she tries to anticipate what the others want and how to avoid anything that might cost her a place with them.

During the game, a frustrated Riley trips an opponent and is sent to the penalty box. Her breathing speeds up, and she clutches at her chest and neck. Inside Headquarters, Anxiety is caught in a frantic loop at the controls, having pushed the other emotions aside.
Joy makes it back to Headquarters and reaches Anxiety. The turning point is not a clever way to take control away from Anxiety; it is the recognition that one future-focused plan cannot guarantee Riley’s safety. Riley’s breathing gradually steadies as she begins to notice and reconnect with the world around her, and the panic subsides.

- Disney and Pixar?s ?Inside Out 2? returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is disrupted by something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust aren?t sure how to feel when Anxiety and friends show up.
Does Anxiety get the best of Riley?
For a while, yes: Anxiety takes over Headquarters, and her attempt to protect Riley through relentless planning becomes excessive. But she does not win permanently, define Riley by herself, or get banished. The film’s resolution leaves Anxiety as part of Riley’s emotional life while making clear that no single feeling should control her identity.
The contrast between Joy and Anxiety helps explain the ending. Anxiety is trying to anticipate risks and protect Riley from what could go wrong; Joy comes to understand that Riley cannot be reduced to a polished, permanently happy version of herself. Their resolution is cooperation, not victory over an enemy. This is an interpretation of the story, not a clinical model of how emotions work.

What does Riley’s panic attack mean in the story?
The film makes Riley’s internal overwhelm visible through the penalty box, her physical distress, and Anxiety’s frantic movement at Headquarters. The scene gives viewers a clear image of panic, but it should not be read as a treatment lesson or a promise that noticing one’s surroundings will stop an attack.
In an August 2024 discussion, UC Berkeley psychology professor and film consultant Dacher Keltner described the value of giving families language for the experience: “Panic and anxiety, those are part of our evolutionary design. They have their point. They can get excessive, of course, but just to be there and to have a language, to let the child know they’re not alone, that these are common reactions, is such a powerful [message].” That is a point about normalizing anxiety and opening conversations, not a guarantee about how every person’s panic will unfold.

Why the ending is about accepting a more complicated self
Riley does not return to an untouched childhood identity. She is growing, and her beliefs about herself are more complicated than a single positive slogan. Joy’s change of heart matters because she stops treating happiness as the only acceptable outcome and makes room for Riley’s full range of experiences.
That reading fits the filmmakers’ stated hopes. Director Kelsey Mann said he wanted to “tell a story that made some teenagers lives that much easier.” Pixar’s production account describes the filmmakers consulting experts and speaking with psychologists about teenage development. The story uses Headquarters as a metaphor, not as a literal map of the brain; its ending suggests that growing up means making space for uncomfortable feelings as part of a larger self.

Lead editor Maurissa Horwitz told UC Berkeley that she was hearing about family conversations “whether it’s around anxiety or self-talk.” The film’s value, then, is not that it supplies a clinical explanation, but that it gives families a shared way to talk about difficult emotions.
