Lady Gaga’s high-tech Grammy performance was her 2016 tribute to David Bowie at the 58th GRAMMY Awards—not her separate 2026 performance. Intel, a collaborator on the production, said the tribute combined movement-responsive visuals, projected digital makeup, an interactive LED wall, robotic piano arms and a three-dimensional Bowie image.
What made the 2016 Bowie tribute high-tech?
Intel’s 2016 announcement described the performance as a collaboration to bring Gaga’s Bowie tribute to life with interactive content and specially configured systems. In Intel’s account, the technology was woven into the stage effects: some visuals responded to Gaga’s movements and commands, while other elements used ring input, projection, robotics and holographic display materials.

How the reported effects worked
| What the audience saw | How Intel said it was controlled or produced |
|---|---|
| Changing projected “digital makeup” on Gaga’s face | Intel described facial tracking and projection that changed the visuals in response to her movements. |
| Content animating on an LED wall | Intel said a ring based on its Curie technology was used to animate the content. |
| A piano moved by robotic arms | Intel said Atom-powered robotic arms moved the piano. |
| A three-dimensional image of David Bowie | Intel described a Curie-based ring used with holographic display materials to create the image. |
Intel also identified Xeon processor-based media servers as part of the specially configured system. The announcement does not provide measurements of latency, reliability, cost or audience impact, so the component names should not be taken as performance statistics.

What Gaga said about the collaboration
Intel’s announcement quoted Gaga describing her interest in combining technology and art: “I like to do things that integrate technology and art with powerful experiences,” she said. She added that the collaboration was different from anything she had done before and that Intel had given her “so much amazing technology to play with.”
How the 2016 performance differs from Gaga’s 2026 Grammy appearance
The Intel-backed Bowie tribute took place at the 58th GRAMMY Awards in 2016. The Recording Academy’s 2026 coverage describes a separate Gaga performance of “Abracadabra.” They are different performances, separated by a decade; the later appearance was not the Bowie tribute.
