What is CNN’s Have I Got News for You?
It is CNN’s American adaptation of a British topical comedy panel quiz. Hat Trick Productions makes the U.S. series for CNN Originals; CNN says Hat Trick has produced the British original since 1990. CNN’s launch announcement described the show as a comedy panel series that approaches news through satire and the surreal.

The format starts with current events and turns them into conversation and games. The panel’s guests change, while the host and two captains provide a familiar structure. Amber Ruffin described it as “a goofy time disguised as a quiz show,” explaining that Wood reviews the week’s news and quizzes the panel, with a guest on each captain’s team. CNN’s October 18, 2024 transcript also characterizes the show as smart, silly conversations and games among comedians, pundits, political figures and celebrities.
Who hosts the show?
- Roy Wood Jr. is the host. In CNN’s announcement, the comedian said: “It is an honor to be a part of such a hallowed British institution to help make sense of the American institutions of chaos, name calling, disinformation, reality television and the 8-hour news cycle.” CNN’s host announcement

Is it the same show as the British version?
It is an American adaptation of the British show, not a separate title unrelated to it. The U.S. series uses the same broad premise—a panel reacting to current news through comedy and quiz-style games—but features American news and a U.S. cast. The available CNN descriptions establish that shared format and production connection, but do not provide a detailed comparison of rules or episode structure. CNN says Hat Trick has made the original since 1990.

The show is built around a weekly current-events recap and quiz-style games rather than relying only on a host monologue or a series of interviews. A stable host and captains anchor each episode, while guests rotate and respond to the news. That makes topicality central: the jokes and discussion are tied to the week’s headlines. The available descriptions support this distinction, but not a detailed scene-by-scene comparison with the British original or other panel shows.
