This is an editorial ranking of the wider manga and anime cast, weighing story importance, development, relationships and audience recognition—not just driving ability. There is no official canonical “best characters” order.
How this ranking works
Initial D, created by Shuichi Shigeno, is a street-racing manga and anime especially associated with drifting. The official franchise portal says the manga began in Young Magazine in 1995 and ran for 18 years (official franchise portal; Kodansha). The story’s defining setup is simple and effective: tofu-shop delivery driver Takumi discovers that the ordinary route he has driven for years has made him an extraordinary downhill racer.
The order below balances each character’s contribution to the story, growth, relationships and lasting recognition. Driving skill matters, but a character ranking is not a race-result table. Audience surveys can add context, but their results reflect particular groups of voters rather than all readers and viewers.
The 10 best Initial D characters
1. Takumi Fujiwara
Takumi is the series’ central character and its most effective link between everyday life and mountain-pass racing. His repeated tofu deliveries in the AE86 have quietly trained him for a world he did not set out to join. As his ability becomes visible, the story follows not only what he can do behind the wheel but also how he understands competition, choice and his own ambitions.

Kodansha’s series description emphasizes the AE86 and Takumi’s untapped potential. SEGA’s licensed Arcade Stage 8 character guide identifies him as Project D’s downhill ace (Kodansha; SEGA character guide). He belongs at the top because the series’ premise, emotional point of view and most recognizable car all converge in him.
2. Bunta Fujiwara
Takumi’s father is both a mentor and a measure of the skill his son is still trying to understand. Bunta taught Takumi to drive from scratch, according to SEGA’s guide, and his calm confidence makes him feel formidable even when he is not the focus of a race. He also gives the story a useful counterpoint: Takumi’s talent may be emerging, but Bunta knows exactly how much more there is to learn.
Bunta often tops fan-favorite lists, but that does not make him the protagonist or settle a universal ranking. His place here reflects his impact on Takumi’s development and his own enduring presence in the franchise.
3. Ryosuke Takahashi
Ryosuke supplies the strategic intelligence that expands the story beyond local rivalries. A gifted driver in his own right, he conceives and commands Project D, giving the later story a larger purpose and a structure in which other racers can develop. His appeal comes from the combination of competence and vision: he can analyze a race, but he can also build a team and a plan around the people in it.
4. Keisuke Takahashi
Keisuke’s ambition and improvement make him an important parallel to Takumi. He begins as a formidable rival, and his defeat by Takumi is one of the early turning points highlighted in Kodansha’s series synopsis. Over time, he has to turn raw confidence into discipline and results.
As Project D’s hillclimb ace, he occupies a distinct role from Takumi, the downhill specialist. SEGA’s guide notes Keisuke’s growth, making his arc a reminder that the series’ best racers are not simply born finished (SEGA character guide).
5. Itsuki Takeuchi
Itsuki is Takumi’s best friend and one of the story’s most useful audience surrogates. His excitement about racing, missteps and earnestness bring humor to a series that could otherwise become narrowly focused on technique and rivalries. As a member of the Akina Speed Stars, he also helps make the local racing scene feel like a social world rather than a list of opponents.

SEGA’s guide identifies him as Takumi’s best friend and a Speed Stars member (SEGA character guide). His importance is less about being the fastest and more about showing what the racing community means to people who are not prodigies.
6. Koichiro Iketani
Iketani, the Speed Stars leader, brings a more vulnerable kind of commitment to the cast. His earnestness makes the team’s ambitions feel human: not everyone in this world is a natural talent or a mastermind, and the effort to belong matters too.
A 2025 Current Automobile survey of 132 classic-car enthusiasts placed Iketani fifth among favorite characters, with three votes. That is a small, specific sample—not a representative measure of the whole Initial D audience—but it is one indication that his supporting role resonates (Current Automobile survey).
7. Takeshi Nakazato
As the Night Kids leader, Nakazato helps establish that the racing world around Akina has serious rivals and real pressure. He is memorable partly because his confidence and competitive intensity do not always protect him when a race turns against him. He earns his place for what he adds to the escalation of the early story: a rival can be strong, proud and consequential without being the central hero.
8. Mako Sato
Mako is a capable racer who broadens the cast beyond the principal male rivalries. As one half of Impact Blue, she brings a distinct team dynamic and a focused, full-speed approach to racing. SEGA’s guide identifies her as an Impact Blue racer and describes her driving style (SEGA character guide).
Her inclusion also matters to the shape of the ensemble: the series’ racing world is more interesting when its memorable drivers do not all serve the same rivalry or point of view.
9. Natsuki Mogi
Natsuki matters because Takumi’s life is not only about cars. Her relationship with him brings the story’s coming-of-age and personal-drama dimensions into view, complicating the idea that becoming a better driver is the only change he needs to make. Kodansha lists “human drama” among the series’ keywords, though its page does not provide a character biography (Kodansha).

Sayuki, Mako’s Impact Blue partner, makes the practical work around racing visible. SEGA’s guide describes her as a supporter who checks courses and has mechanical knowledge (SEGA character guide). That role gives the team a fuller identity: successful racing depends on preparation and support as well as the driver at the wheel.
The lower places are especially open to debate. Yuichi Tachibana and later-stage rivals are plausible alternatives, depending on whether a reader values mentorship, racing conflict or personal development most.

There is no single definitive answer: different polls ask different groups, and “favorite” is not the same as “best written” or “best driver.” Two available snapshots illustrate the variation:

Both snapshots put Bunta near the top, but they are not evidence of a universal consensus. The first is restricted to classic-car enthusiasts; the second reflects users of a Japanese ranking site. Neither ranks characters by driving ability.
Is Bunta a better character than Takumi?
It depends on what “better” means. Takumi is the stronger choice if you mean the central character whose skills and perspective carry the main story. Bunta may be your pick if you value the mentor who shapes Takumi and whose reputation looms over the racing world. Popularity polls can show whom a particular group favors, but they cannot decide which character is better written for every reader.
Best character versus best driver
A driver ranking would use different criteria: race results, technique, adaptability and the level of competition. This list instead weighs character function and development alongside recognition. Takumi’s protagonist role does not by itself prove he is the best driver in every contest; likewise, a racer’s ability alone does not make that character the most compelling part of the story.
