India’s Daughter, Leslee Udwin’s documentary about the December 2012 Delhi gang rape, brought together testimony from the victim’s family, a convicted defendant, professionals, activists and public figures. Their accounts were not a single shared interpretation: some focused on grief and fear, others on patriarchy, deprivation, punishment or the ethics of broadcasting the film.
What did family members say in India’s Daughter?
Scroll’s March 4, 2015 report published edited excerpts from the film, not a complete transcript. The statements below should be read as those speakers’ perspectives, rather than as a unified family position. Scroll’s edited excerpts
Jyoti’s parents: grief, lost hopes and fear
Jyoti’s father recalled the future he had imagined for his daughter after her internship and condemned the convicts. He also spoke about his fear and helplessness over the juvenile’s release: “We are like a bird whose wings have been cut. We cannot fly. We live with fear and anxiety.”
Her mother remembered Jyoti’s hope of becoming a doctor and rejected the impulse to blame girls for going out or for their clothing. “It’s the boys who should be accused and asked why they do this,” she said.

What did experts and public figures say?
The film’s professional and public voices offered different explanations of the case and its social context. Their roles matter: a jail psychiatrist’s interpretation, an activist’s account of public anger, a former judge’s remarks on equality and a juvenile-justice advocate’s argument about punishment are not interchangeable findings.
Sandeep Goyal, the convicts’ jail psychiatrist
Goyal described deprived and overcrowded surroundings, violence against women treated as normal, antisocial traits and harmful cultural values. These were his attributed interpretations in edited excerpts, not clinical findings independently established by the reporting.

Krishnan, secretary of the All India Progressive Women’s Association, connected the case to wider anger about rape culture and the expectation that women should change their behaviour to stay safe. She described the surge of feeling this way: “It is always difficult to tell why one particular case, and why… it is like a dam bursting.”
Retired Justice Leila Seth: equality and patriarchy
Seth, a member of the three-person committee headed by former Chief Justice J. S. Verma after the assault, spoke about constitutional equality and persistent patriarchy: “The Constitution provides for equality. It hasn’t happened because the men don’t allow it to happen… Also it is because of the historical tradition of patriarchy which has been over the years embedded into men and into women.”

Why was India’s Daughter controversial?
The dispute involved legal restrictions, objections to the interview and a disagreement over what the film’s editorial framing accomplished. The documentary included an interview with convicted defendant Mukesh Singh, which became a focus of the controversy.
The planned India broadcast was restricted
The film was scheduled to air on NDTV24x7 on March 8, 2015, International Women’s Day. A Delhi High Court order restricted media from broadcasting, publishing or transmitting portions of Singh’s interview. NDTV reported that the government alleged conditions had been breached. These are historical accounts of the 2015 restriction; they do not establish the order’s current legal status or the film’s present availability in India.
The BBC aired the film in the UK and other countries after bringing its scheduled broadcast forward amid intense interest. It defended including Singh’s interview as a way to examine the mindset behind rape and the wider problem. In a statement quoted by NDTV, the BBC said: “The purpose of including the interview with the perpetrator was to gain an insight into the mind-set of a rapist with a view to understanding the wider problem of rape and not just in India.” The BBC said it set his remarks among other perspectives, including those of parents, the judiciary and a witness. NDTV’s report on the restriction and BBC response
Activists challenged the interview and the film’s framing
Women’s rights activists who had watched the film asked NDTV to postpone its broadcast until proceedings concluded. In their letter, they argued that an airing could prejudice the case, questioned the consent obtained from a person in custody, and criticized the film’s graphic details and framing. They also argued that the documentary did not adequately address systemic criminal-justice failures and could amplify misogynist speech. Their letter records the activists’ position; it is not a court ruling. The activists’ letter, reported by Scroll

The competing claims were about editorial purpose as well as whether the film should air: the BBC said contextualizing the convicted man’s remarks could illuminate a wider problem, while the activists contended that the context and framing were inadequate and risked harm. The controversy therefore cannot be reduced to a single objection or a single defense of the film.
