A new venue at Ballard Pier was announced in 2025, with an opening target in 2026, but the reports available as of October 8, 2026 do not confirm that it opened. The documented change is its location and a new group of partners; how its sound, design and music program might differ remains unknown.
What made the original Blue Frog distinctive?
Blue Frog opened at Todi Mills in Lower Parel in 2007. Scroll.in’s 2016 account described a warehouse-like room with treated acoustics, a substantial stage and a dedicated mixing-console position. The venue hosted Indian and international musicians across genres, and also served as a recording studio and music label.
Those details help explain why artists and patrons remembered more than a place to see a show. Musician Ankur Tewari put it this way: “It wasn’t just the venue. It was the kind of artists performing, the performances, the canteen and the people.” That is one artist’s recollection, not a blueprint for the proposed new venue.
Scroll.in called Blue Frog a venue that “transformed the experience of live music.” That is the article’s assessment of its contribution, rather than an objective industry ranking.

Why did Blue Frog close in 2016?
Blue Frog managing director Sumer Vaswani said the company had spent nine years at the Todi Mills compound, plus a year building the venue, and faced a choice between staying and renovating or moving. He cited congestion in the area and the aim of providing a smoother customer experience. Scroll.in also noted nearby bars competing for attention, but Vaswani denied that falling numbers were the reason. His explanation should be understood as the company’s stated rationale, not proof that congestion was the sole cause.
Did its first promised comeback happen?
No. In 2016, Blue Frog said it expected to return in two Mumbai locations, one in North Mumbai and one in South Mumbai, possibly in a new avatar. The company also discussed pop-ups, a possible festival, and activity in Pune and Bengaluru. These were plans at the time, not evidence that a return was secured.

In 2020, The Indian Express reported that the relocation plans had not materialized, citing high rentals. It also reported that the Pune and Bengaluru outlets had shut in subsequent years, and that Blue Frog Media had filed for bankruptcy, with insolvency proceedings before the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal. A co-founder told the paper, “We all (the founders) have moved on, and it’s difficult to get the same energy back. But never say never.” That comment described the situation in 2020, not the later revival plan.
Where is the newly announced venue, and has it opened?
The Indian Express reported on October 14, 2025 that founder Mahesh Mathai had revived the company in 2024 and confirmed a Blue Frog venue at Ballard Pier. It named Suresh and Karan Bhojwani and Jehan Johar as partners, and reported an expected opening in March or April 2026. Mathai said: “It’s a beautiful place with a view of the sea. I can confirm that Blue Frog is opening.”

Rolling Stone India reported on October 29, 2025 that the venue was planned for the international cruise terminal at Ballard Pier, with an early-2026 target. Both reports establish an announced plan, not a completed opening. As of October 8, 2026, the reporting available here does not establish whether the venue is operating.

The clearest contrast is the setting: the original was in the Todi Mills compound in Lower Parel; the proposed return is at Ballard Pier. The new project also has a named partner group. Beyond those points, the available reporting does not establish what the venue will be like.

These are gaps in what has been established publicly in the cited reports, not evidence that the new venue will omit the old features. Tewari’s recollection offers a useful lens for what returning patrons might judge: the artists, performances, canteen and people mattered alongside the room. It does not show that any of those elements will carry over.
What to look for in a genuine return
A confirmed opening would answer only whether Blue Frog is operating again. To judge whether it has returned in a meaningfully different form, readers would need reliable information about its stage and acoustics, programming, recording or other artist facilities, and the experience of attending. Until such details are reported, the most accurate description is a planned Ballard Pier return whose status and character remain unresolved.
