For a first watch, see the five Indiana Jones movies in theatrical release order: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Dial of Destiny. That order preserves how audiences first met the characters, tone, and callbacks. If you prefer the story’s main events in chronological order, start with Temple of Doom.
Indiana Jones movies in release order
Release order is the clearest choice for first-time viewers and a natural order for most rewatches. It follows the films’ original theatrical run, rather than the years in which their stories take place.
- Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
- Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
- Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
Lucasfilm identifies Dial of Destiny as the fifth installment, following the four earlier theatrical adventures. Rotten Tomatoes’ viewing guide also lists the films in release order: How to Watch Indiana Jones in Order.

- Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom — 1935
- Raiders of the Lost Ark — 1936
- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade — 1938
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull — 1957
- Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny — 1969
This order puts Temple of Doom before Raiders, because its main story takes place a year earlier. It is a practical whole-film sequence, not a strict chronology of every scene.
Why the prologues complicate strict chronology
The Last Crusade opens in 1912 before moving to its main 1938 story. Dial of Destiny opens in 1944 before its main story in 1969. To put every scene in chronological order, you would have to split those films apart; watching each one intact is simpler. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, updated September 6, 2023, supports the story-year placements and prologue dates.

Which watch order should you choose?
| Approach | Sequence | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Release order | Raiders → Temple of Doom → The Last Crusade → Kingdom of the Crystal Skull → Dial of Destiny | First-time viewers and most rewatches; it follows the series’ original introduction order. |
| Principal story chronology | Temple of Doom → Raiders → The Last Crusade → Kingdom of the Crystal Skull → Dial of Destiny | Viewers who prioritize the main story years and are comfortable with the two prologues occurring out of sequence. |
Is Young Indiana Jones part of the movie order?
No. The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones is a separate television series, not a prerequisite for the five theatrical movies. Lucasfilm says it debuted on ABC in 1992 and comprises 22 feature-length episodes filmed across about two dozen countries. Watch it separately if you want more Indiana Jones stories; it does not need to be inserted into either movie sequence. See Lucasfilm’s announcement about Indiana Jones on Disney+.
