Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, copy its server URL and stream key, configure FFmpeg for the source and your available outbound bandwidth, then check YouTube’s preview and stream health before making the broadcast public. Use the RTMPS ingest URL shown by YouTube when available. A successful technical setup does not by itself grant rights to broadcast a game or make a rerun eligible for monetization.
Check livestream access and gameplay rights first
Confirm the channel and the game are eligible
Make sure the channel can livestream and that you have permission to broadcast the specific gameplay and its audio. Rules vary by game publisher; because no game is specified here, check the publisher’s current streaming policy rather than assuming that a game may be rebroadcast continuously or used commercially.
Understand copyright and monetization separately
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can interrupt a stream, and even a licensed work may require the rights owner to allowlist your channel. YouTube’s monetization policies also apply to live streams: repetitive, mass-produced or reused material without meaningful added value may not qualify. A working FFmpeg stream is not evidence of permission or monetization eligibility.
Prepare the source file and Ubuntu VPS
Inspect the gameplay recording
Choose a file you are allowed to broadcast. Check its resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and duration before selecting an output profile. The right FFmpeg settings depend on those properties and on whether the VPS can transcode the video in real time.

Install and check FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg using the supported package source for your Ubuntu release, then check the installed build and its local documentation. Package versions and VPS images vary, so there is no single release-specific installation command or version to rely on here. The FFmpeg project’s documentation can differ by revision; use the documentation that matches the installed build when a flag or encoder is unavailable.
Protect your stream key
Treat the key as a password. Do not put a live key in a public script, screenshot, article, shared terminal log or shell history. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the VPS configuration.
Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream and choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key YouTube provides. Use the secure RTMPS endpoint shown there when supported.
- Keep the URL and key private, and supply them to FFmpeg on the VPS rather than publishing them in a guide or public configuration.
Scheduling can help you plan the broadcast and give viewers a reminder. YouTube’s documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that a longer session will be archived in the same way or that one encoder session can run indefinitely.

Choose output settings that fit the recording and connection
Use YouTube’s H.264 recommendations as a starting point
YouTube lists H.264 as supported and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its current encoder settings list these recommended H.264 video bitrates:

These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of visual quality or stream stability. Match the output frame rate to the source where practical, test with representative gameplay motion and audio, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio as supported.
Allow for bandwidth overhead
The VPS needs sustained outbound capacity for the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom, so a VPS that can only just reach the configured bitrate is not a safe choice. A provider’s advertised port speed alone does not establish sustained throughput, route quality to YouTube ingest, or the plan’s traffic allowance.

Choose whether FFmpeg will transcode
If the source is not already in a suitable format or profile, FFmpeg may need to encode video and audio, which requires CPU resources on the VPS. A copy-based command avoids video re-encoding but cannot change the source’s codec, bitrate, resolution or frame rate. Confirm that the actual file and FFmpeg build support the chosen approach; do not assume a command will work unchanged for every recording.

Set the encoder options for your chosen profile
A transcoding command needs explicit choices appropriate to the source and target: video encoder, resolution and frame rate if changing them, video bitrate and rate-control settings, keyframe interval, audio encoder and bitrate, and YouTube’s exact ingest destination. For H.264, use the matching recommended bitrate in the table and a two-second keyframe interval. Check locally that the required encoders are present in your FFmpeg build.
For a source already encoded in compatible formats, stream-copy options may avoid transcoding, but they cannot enforce a new bitrate, resolution, frame rate or keyframe interval. If the source profile does not meet the intended output settings, transcode only if the VPS can sustain that work in real time. Never place a real stream key in a command example that might be copied or shared.
Plan for a file that ends
Sending a media file is not the same as running an endless playlist. When the input reaches its end, FFmpeg’s job for that input ends unless you deliberately configure a repeat or playlist workflow. Verify the expected behavior with a test recording before relying on a long rerun, and consider YouTube’s documented archive limit when planning the session.

Test the feed before going public
- Start with a private or unlisted test if that suits your channel and event.
- In Live Control Room, confirm YouTube receives the feed and shows a valid preview.
- Check picture, audio, motion, frame rate and stream-health messages while representative gameplay is playing.
- Confirm the VPS sustains the configured total bitrate with the recommended bandwidth headroom.
- After correcting any errors, set the intended audience visibility and begin the scheduled or public run.
Prepare the encoder ahead of the planned start and monitor the feed. A process restart policy on the server may restart a crashed FFmpeg process, but it will not repair an invalid key, an exhausted traffic allowance, a broken file, a copyright interruption or a YouTube policy restriction.
Choose a VPS for sustained streaming, not just advertised speed
Compare the specific plans on sustained outbound throughput, monthly transfer caps or fair-use terms, CPU allocation if transcoding, storage and disk I/O for the video file, provider support, server region and route to YouTube ingest, and rules about long-running processes. No provider or plan is established here as the best choice for India, and no provider’s actual network performance can be inferred from a port-speed headline. Test the route and sustained feed from the plan you intend to use.
Troubleshooting common failures
