What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled.
- A Restream account with YouTube available as a destination.
- An India-region VPS, if you want the server located in India, with enough sustained outbound capacity and monthly data transfer for your chosen bitrate.
- Streaming encoder software installed on the VPS. Restream supports OBS and other encoder software; the protocol and endpoint must match the details shown for your Restream stream.
- A pre-recorded programme or live video source, plus a plan for supervision, recovery and scheduled restarts.
There is no evidence-based universal minimum CPU or RAM for this setup. A VPS that copies an already-encoded file has a different workload from one that encodes or transcodes video in real time. Size the server for the actual workload and test the stream from the chosen provider and region.
1. Enable YouTube livestreaming
- Sign in to the YouTube channel that will host the broadcast and enable livestreaming, completing phone verification if YouTube asks for it.
- If this is the channel’s first livestream activation, allow for the 24-hour activation wait described in Restream’s YouTube setup guide.
- The channel owner should add the channel to Restream; Restream’s setup guidance says a channel manager or editor should not perform this connection instead of the owner.
Do this before your planned start time. A VPS and a correctly configured encoder cannot bypass YouTube’s channel eligibility or first-time activation requirement.
2. Create a Restream encoder stream and enable YouTube
- In Restream, choose New Stream → Encoder | RTMP.
- Enable YouTube in the destination list and complete any prompted account connection.
- Open the stream card and copy the RTMP URL and stream key shown there.
- In the VPS encoder, select the protocol supported by the Restream setup and enter Restream’s server URL and stream key. Do not put YouTube’s direct-ingest URL in this field: the encoder must publish to Restream for Restream to relay the stream to YouTube.
- Save the encoder configuration, start output, and check both Restream’s connection status and the YouTube live preview before treating the broadcast as live.
Restream says its software ingestion supports RTMP and SRT, but the exact endpoint and available protocol should come from the stream setup page and encoder. Restream’s encoder connection documentation is at Connect an encoder to Restream. Reusing the same RTMP stream card keeps its key unless it is reset; creating a new RTMP stream means updating the encoder with that stream’s credentials.

3. Choose a conservative video profile and check VPS capacity
Restream’s general guidance is at least 10 Mbps upload speed, with 25 Mbps or higher recommended for Full HD. It gives 1080p at 30 FPS as a general starting point and advises matching resolution, frame rate and bitrate to the destination and connection. Those figures are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular VPS plan can sustain the broadcast.
- Start with a profile your VPS can sustain. Use Restream’s recommendations as a baseline, then verify outbound throughput from the actual VPS to the Restream endpoint during a sustained test.
- Account for transfer volume. Estimate data use from your bitrate and planned stream hours, and check the provider’s monthly transfer allowance, overage pricing and egress terms before committing.
- Distinguish copying from encoding. Looping an already-encoded recording may need less CPU than real-time encoding or transcoding. Monitor CPU, memory, network throughput and encoder health under the intended workload.
- Check regional routing. An India region may suit your operating needs, but confirm current availability and test the route to Restream; region alone does not establish reliable throughput.
Restream’s published general settings guidance is available at Best settings for streaming. It does not specify a universal VPS CPU, RAM or monthly transfer requirement.

4. Protect the stream key and choose the right transport
Treat the Restream stream key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to that stream. Keep it in protected service configuration, exclude it from public logs and screenshots, and reset it in Restream if it is exposed. Restream documents that the key remains static unless reset.
For a direct encoder-to-YouTube connection, YouTube recommends RTMPS, which adds TLS/SSL encryption to RTMP. This guide uses a relay: the VPS sends to Restream, and Restream forwards to YouTube. For that path, use the protocol and address that Restream provides, and verify that the encoder supports them. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

5. Operate continuous streaming with planned sessions
Plan a restart at least every 24 hours
Restream does not impose a stream-length limit, but warns that maintenance may restart a stream that has been running for more than 24 hours. It recommends restarting every 24 hours. Schedule a controlled restart rather than treating a long-running process as self-healing; monitor the encoder, Restream connection and YouTube live status.
Keep replay archives in mind
YouTube has no stated overall stream-duration limit, but YouTube and Restream say automatic archives apply to streams under 12 hours. If preserving each broadcast as a complete YouTube replay matters, schedule separate sessions shorter than 12 hours and verify the resulting archives. A continuous broadcast and a complete replay archive are different operational goals.

Supervise the whole delivery chain
Use process supervision and health checks on the VPS, but also check the Restream destination and YouTube status. A server-provider availability commitment applies to the provider’s defined infrastructure scope, not automatically to the encoder-to-Restream-to-YouTube chain. For example, DigitalOcean’s June 3, 2025 CPU Droplet SLA states a 99.99% monthly individual Droplet uptime commitment subject to its terms and exclusions; AWS Lightsail’s SLA likewise defines instance availability and exclusions. Neither figure guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.

| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Sustained outbound bitrate and monthly transfer allowance, including overage terms | A live stream sends data continuously; a plan can have adequate CPU yet fail the transfer or egress requirement. |
| India region and route quality to Restream | Regional availability does not prove that the route will sustain the selected stream profile. |
| CPU and RAM for the intended encoder workload | Copying an encoded file differs from encoding or transcoding in real time; no universal minimum is established. |
| Availability scope and exclusions | Provider SLAs concern defined infrastructure availability and do not cover every part of the streaming chain. |
| Support and monitoring facilities | Useful for identifying VPS-level failures, though separate checks are still needed for Restream and YouTube. |
Restream and hosting providers may change settings, regional availability, transfer terms and service commitments. Confirm them on the provider’s current pages before choosing a plan.
Troubleshooting common failures
Restream does not receive video from the VPS
- Check that the encoder is using the RTMP URL and stream key from the correct Restream stream card.
- Confirm the protocol matches the endpoint Restream shows; do not substitute YouTube’s direct-ingest URL.
- If you created a new RTMP stream or reset the key, replace the saved credentials in the VPS encoder.
- Check VPS outbound connectivity and encoder logs, while keeping the stream key redacted.
YouTube is not available as a destination or the channel will not connect
- Confirm livestreaming is enabled and any phone verification is complete.
- For a first activation, allow the stated 24-hour wait.
- Have the channel owner perform the Restream connection rather than relying on a manager or editor.
- Recheck the YouTube destination connection in Restream before restarting the encoder.
The stream starts but drops or buffers
- Measure sustained VPS outbound throughput, not just a short speed test, and compare it with the chosen profile.
- Check for CPU or memory pressure if the VPS is encoding or transcoding.
- Check Restream and YouTube status separately to identify which leg of the relay is failing.
- Review the VPS transfer allowance and network terms for throttling or exhausted quota.
The broadcast has been running for a day or the replay is missing
- Schedule the planned restart by the 24-hour point, following Restream’s recommendation.
- If a complete YouTube replay is required, make sessions shorter than 12 hours; streams outside the automatic archive threshold may not be archived automatically.
- Check the YouTube stream archive settings and resulting video after each session instead of assuming that a continuous live session will produce one complete replay.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel built around uploaded recordings or playlists, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to maintaining a VPS encoder: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud service loops uploaded videos, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; no quality tiers or re-encoding.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, once per account.
- Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. The product is the same on every plan; only billing length changes.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. India users can pay by UPI or card; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. StreamNeo is for YouTube uploaded-video streams, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before scheduling a continuous broadcast, confirm that you have the rights to every recording, music track and other material in the playlist, and review YouTube’s current copyright and channel monetization policies. A successful technical relay does not establish permission to broadcast the content or guarantee monetization. This matters particularly for repeated or third-party recordings: assess the rights and whether the programming offers sufficient original value rather than assuming that looping makes it compliant.
