You can use a second-hand laptop to send prerecorded video to YouTube as a live stream, but the laptop must be able to run encoder software reliably and stay powered and connected. YouTube does not publish a universal minimum laptop specification for this use. Before planning an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast, account for a key limitation: a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured in YouTube’s archive.
What you need—and what a laptop does
The laptop runs encoder software that sends your prerecorded video to YouTube. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, you connect the encoder with the Live server URL and stream key, then check the preview and monitor the broadcast. This is a computer-based stream, not a camera broadcast. YouTube’s setup guidance does not specify a minimum CPU, memory, graphics, storage, or laptop model for this job, so no particular second-hand laptop can be assumed to work without testing.
Plan for the actual video resolution, encoder workload, power supply, cooling, and internet connection you intend to use. Inspect the specific machine and test it under those conditions before relying on it for a continuous channel. YouTube’s documentation does not establish that an old laptop will run 24/7 reliably.
Check YouTube live-stream access first
Before buying or setting up equipment, confirm that the channel can livestream. YouTube’s current guidance requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and that the person livestreaming is at least 16 years old. Set up the laptop and encoder
- Prepare the source video. Keep the prerecorded video or playlist accessible to the encoder, and check that its sound and picture are correct. Use only material you have the rights to stream.
- Open YouTube’s live control room and create a stream. Choose the encoder-based streaming option and obtain the stream’s server URL and stream key. YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder guide describes this setup.
- Enter the connection details in the encoder. Copy the server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the intended video and audio arrive correctly before you start the public stream. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality during transmission; its YouTube live streaming tips cover encoder and monitoring basics.
- Keep the laptop operating. The encoder must continue sending video, and the machine needs power and a working internet connection. A sleep, power, thermal, software, or network interruption can stop the stream; assess and test the particular laptop and local setup rather than assuming continuous operation.
Plan for archives separately from a 24/7 broadcast
A continuous stream and a saved replay are different goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast a poor choice if you are counting on YouTube to preserve the full replay. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. See Archive live streams.
If you need a replay, plan how to retain a local copy and consider shorter stream sessions instead of relying on one stream longer than 12 hours. This archive caveat does not itself establish a particular restart schedule or guarantee that every shorter stream will be saved.

Set the audience accurately for children’s content
If the channel’s content is directed to children, select the appropriate Made for Kids audience setting. YouTube says creators should not rely only on automated systems to make that decision. The setting affects the viewing experience: Made for Kids livestreams do not have live chat or Super Chat, and personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may appear. Other features may also be restricted. Consult YouTube’s guidance on features unavailable on Made for Kids content and its audience-setting guidance.
Do not treat continuous playback as a monetization shortcut
Running a channel around the clock does not by itself qualify it for earnings. YouTube’s current Partner Program overview lists the full ad-revenue threshold as 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 valid public long-form watch hours in the previous 365 days or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Eligibility also depends on applicable policies, location and account conditions, followed by YouTube’s channel review; meeting a threshold is not acceptance or a revenue guarantee. YouTube’s monetization policy expects original, authentic work and says content should not be mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative. Reviewers may consider the channel’s theme, newest and most-viewed videos, watch-time share, metadata, and About section. A loop is not a monetization guarantee, so build the channel around material that meets YouTube’s originality standards. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
Where the second-hand laptop approach can fail
- The stream will not connect: check that the server URL and stream key were copied into the correct encoder fields and that the channel is eligible to livestream.
- YouTube’s preview has no video or audio: confirm the encoder is using the intended source and that the source file plays with sound on the laptop; check the preview before going live.
- The stream stops unexpectedly: check power, sleep settings, internet connectivity, and whether the laptop remains stable under the encoder workload. YouTube does not publish a universal old-laptop specification or 24/7 reliability guarantee.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: if a stream exceeded 12 hours, YouTube warns it may not be captured. Keep a local archive and plan around the archive limit.
- Features are unavailable on a child-directed stream: Made for Kids restrictions disable live chat and Super Chat, among other features; this is a policy effect, not necessarily an encoder fault.
DIY costs and practical trade-offs
The laptop method requires the computer to remain on and connected while its encoder sends the stream. Your actual costs depend on the particular used machine, its condition, and local electricity and internet arrangements; YouTube’s guidance does not establish those costs or provide a reliable service-life estimate for second-hand hardware. Test your own setup rather than budgeting around an assumed minimum specification.
