You can keep Tamil bedtime stories live on YouTube from an Ubuntu VPS by publishing prerecorded, rights-cleared media with FFmpeg and supervising the encoder with systemd. The VPS can keep running after your home computer is off, but this setup is not inherently outage-proof: test it, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and prepare for process, network, and platform interruptions.
What you need and how the setup works
The basic chain is: a YouTube live broadcast and stream key, story media stored on the VPS, FFmpeg to publish the media to YouTube, and a systemd service to restart FFmpeg after process failures. YouTube Live Control Room remains important: systemd can supervise a local process, but it cannot confirm that YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio.
- An Ubuntu VPS with enough storage for your media and enough processing and upload capacity for your chosen output. No universal minimum CPU, RAM, storage, or bandwidth is established for this workload; validate the actual VPS and stream before relying on it.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS. Options and supported formats can vary by build, so check the installed version and its documentation.
- Story text, narration, music, sound effects, and artwork that you have the rights to use.
- A YouTube channel able to livestream, a scheduled or created broadcast, and its ingest settings and stream key.
Prepare the YouTube broadcast and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you intend to use. Follow the current on-screen steps to obtain the encoder ingest settings and stream key.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not put it in a public repository, publish it in a script, or let it appear in logs. Use a private configuration method appropriate to your server, and restrict access to it.
- Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest endpoint where available. RTMPS is RTMP carried over SSL/TLS; Google’s ingestion guidance specifies port 443 and hostname/SNI handling. Do not assume a plain RTMP example is encrypted or substitute an endpoint without checking the current YouTube settings.
- Before the planned continuous stream, test the broadcast with representative video and audio, then check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and messages.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
For a static or gently animated bedtime-story scene, 720p at 30 frames per second is a sensible starting point if the VPS can encode it and sustain the upload. These figures are YouTube’s H.264 encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of quality or a universal bandwidth requirement:
| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
YouTube’s encoder guidance accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. For compatibility, choose settings supported by your installed FFmpeg build and the YouTube ingest configuration.

- 【AMD Ryzen 7330U】 – The Efficiency-Tuned Powerhouse,AMD Ryzen 7330U (Zen 3, SMT, 4C/8T) in KAMRUI P2 mini PC crushes rivals: Intel i3-10110U (2C/4T, 2019) and N95 (4 efficiency cores, no HT, single-channel memory). Vs predecessor Ryzen 3 4300U (4C/4T): ~50% faster single-core, ~46% multi-core, 8MB L3 cache (vs 4MB). Beats both Intel chips hugely in multi-core, making heavy multitasking, coding, data work smooth at just 15W TDP. High-end power in a cool, efficient box.
- 【AMD Radeon Graphics】– Triple 4K Vision & Fluidity,The integrated Radeon Graphics (based on the modern Vega architecture with 6 CUs) is a visual beast, outclassing the iGPU offerings from both AMD's prior generation and Intel. The Intel UHD Graphics (i3-10110U/N95) struggles with single-channel memory and low execution units, crippling its gaming performance and barely handling basic 4K video without stuttering. While the older Radeon Vega 5 (4300U) was decent, our 7330U's Radeon Graphics (6 CUs) pushes the boundaries, delivering higher graphics clock speeds (up to 1.8GHz) and significantly better rendering capabilities. It can drive triple 4K@60Hz displays with zero lag, edit photos/videos.
- 【Generous Storage & Easy Expansion】The KAMRUI Pinova P2 mini desktop computers comes with 16GB LPDDR4X RAM (higher frequency, lower power) for buttery‑smooth multitasking, and a 256GB M.2 SSD for blazing fast boot‑up, quick file transfers, and no more long loading screens. It also features two storage expansion slots (1x M.2 2280 SATA/NVMe PCIe 3.0 slot + 1x M.2 2280 SATA slot), supporting up to 4TB total (not included). You’ll have all the space you need for projects, media, and important data.
- 【Triple 4K Display Output】The KAMRUI Pinova P2 mini desktop pc is equipped with HDMI 2.0 ×1 + DP 1.4 ×1 + USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C ×1 (with DP Alt Mode), enabling simultaneous triple 4K@60Hz output. Whether for home entertainment, remote work, or conference room presentations, it delivers an immersive visual experience. Two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑A ports (up to 10Gbps – 21x faster than USB 2.0) make data transfers and device expansion a breeze.
- 【USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C: 10Gbps & Versatile Connectivity】The USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C port on the KAMRUI P2 small pc supports 10Gbps data transfer speeds and can also output DisplayPort 1.4 video. Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
Higher resolution and more complex motion can require more encoding capacity and upload headroom. Choose a bitrate the VPS can sustain, then verify the actual stream in Live Control Room. A configuration that starts successfully is not proof that it will remain healthy over time.
Publish prerecorded stories with FFmpeg
FFmpeg can read media in real time and publish it to a streaming endpoint. The Ubuntu FFmpeg manual documents the -re option for real-time input and an RTMP publishing example. That manual is for an older Ubuntu Bionic release, so check syntax and options against the FFmpeg build on your current Ubuntu VPS. Adapt any example to your media, selected codecs and settings, and YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint; do not copy a plain RTMP example and treat it as secure.

- Upload the rights-cleared story video or audio-and-visual file to a private directory on the VPS. Confirm it plays locally and has the expected duration, picture, and sound.
- Configure FFmpeg to read the media at real-time speed, encode or pass through compatible audio and video as appropriate, and publish to the current YouTube RTMPS ingest endpoint with your protected stream key. Set CBR video bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval within YouTube’s guidance.
- For a single prerecorded file, decide how it should end. If the intended broadcast is continuous, arrange for FFmpeg to loop the media or use a playlist workflow, and verify the transition between items before leaving it unattended. Check the installed FFmpeg build’s supported options rather than assuming a command works identically across versions.
- Start with a private or otherwise suitable test broadcast, and inspect the received picture, narration level, audio continuity, and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room.
Because the key is secret and endpoint requirements can change, avoid placing a real key in a public command example or documentation. Obtain the current endpoint from YouTube’s encoder settings and keep credentials out of exposed scripts, repositories, and logs.
Keep FFmpeg running with systemd
Launching FFmpeg in a terminal is not an unattended service: ending the session or a process failure can stop the stream. Run it under systemd so the service manager can apply a restart policy. Ubuntu’s documentation describes service overrides and systemctl status checks; systemd recommends Restart=on-failure for long-running services.

- Create a systemd unit for the FFmpeg publishing process, using the correct executable path, media location, and private configuration. Ensure the service runs under an account with only the permissions it needs.
- Set a suitable failure-restart policy such as
Restart=on-failure. Configure the service to start after networking is available, while recognizing that service ordering does not guarantee an uninterrupted connection. - Reload systemd after creating or changing the unit, enable the service if it should start with the VPS, and start it. Use
systemctl statusto inspect whether it is active. - Review the service journal when it fails or restarts. Then check Live Control Room: an active FFmpeg process alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
A process restart handles some local failures; it cannot correct every network fault, YouTube-side interruption, invalid key, or unhealthy audio/video signal. Monitor both the service and the live broadcast, and test recovery behavior before depending on the stream.
Check copyright, audience settings, and monetization limits
- Clear the rights for each story’s text, narration, translation, music, sound effects, and artwork. Do not assume a story is public domain or that a particular translation or recording is free to use without checking those specific materials.
- YouTube says an active copyright strike or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast can restrict livestreaming. A rights issue can interrupt a stream as well as affect the channel.
- Set the audience designation according to the actual content and intended audience. The title alone does not determine whether a stream is Made for Kids.
- If designated Made for Kids, YouTube disables live chat and chat replay, comments on live archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications for upcoming streams. Personalized ads are disabled on live streams and premieres, though contextual ads may appear.
- YouTube’s live-stream restrictions also apply live-stream advertiser-friendly guidelines and paid product placement or endorsement restrictions. Do not plan on guaranteed monetization.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits and the stream stops | Systemd status and journal for the service, plus the FFmpeg error message. | Correct the reported media, codec, endpoint, or configuration problem; confirm the service restart policy is active, then verify reception in Live Control Room. |
| Service is active but YouTube shows no healthy stream | Current ingest endpoint, stream key, connection errors, and Live Control Room health messages. | Confirm the broadcast’s current ingest settings and key, use RTMPS as configured, and restart only after correcting the cause. |
| Video or audio is unstable | Actual VPS upload capacity, encoder load, stream bitrate, frame rate, and representative playback. | Reduce output demands if the VPS cannot sustain them; test again and watch YouTube’s health indicators. |
| The story or playlist ends unexpectedly | Whether the selected FFmpeg setup loops the media and whether the next item is readable and compatible. | Correct the loop or playlist configuration and test the transition end to end before leaving the service unattended. |
| YouTube restricts or interrupts the broadcast | Live Control Room notices and the channel’s copyright or livestream eligibility status. | Resolve the relevant rights or channel issue; do not simply restart the same material without addressing the cause. |
What to budget and what this method does not guarantee
Your costs depend on the VPS provider, storage, bandwidth, and the server size needed for your specific media and encoding settings. No India-specific VPS price, provider quality, or minimum server configuration is established here, so compare current provider terms and test the chosen instance rather than relying on a generic estimate. The VPS approach also requires you to configure and monitor the encoder, service, media, and YouTube broadcast yourself.
