No single backup guarantees an uninterrupted viewer experience: both internet paths, power, the encoder or the platform can still fail.
For an India-based studio, shortlist mobile networks using the operators’ coverage maps, then test the intended SIM and equipment at the studio and at the hours the stream will run. Coverage maps do not establish sustained upload speed or protection from congestion. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom over the stream bitrate; use that as a starting point, then test the real setup.
What you need to protect against
A broadband outage is only one possible break in a continuous broadcast. The backup design should account for separate failure points rather than treating “the internet” as one switch.
- Primary internet failure: a second Wi-Fi network or access point on the same broadband connection is not an independent route. Cellular service through a separately tested mobile network can provide a different path.
- Insufficient upload capacity: the backup connection may have coverage but still lack reliable upload bandwidth for the stream.
- Power loss: a working mobile connection cannot help if the router, modem or encoder loses power.
- Encoder or ingestion failure: router failover, backup encoders and backup ingestion address different failure modes and require separate tests.
- Long-running event behavior: network recovery does not establish that YouTube will treat a 24/7 broadcast as one uninterrupted event or archive.

Build a layered backup for an India studio
1. Keep playback and encoding local
Run the animation playback and encoder at the studio so the source and encoding do not depend on a remote computer or an interrupted connection to one. Confirm that the encoder remains healthy when internet access is removed; this helps distinguish a WAN problem from a local playback or encoding failure.
2. Add an independent cellular WAN
Keep fixed broadband as the primary route and configure cellular broadband as the failover route, using a dual-WAN router or another suitable failover arrangement. A second SSID or access point sharing the same broadband line does not protect against that line failing. Where you can establish the underlying networks, prefer a cellular operator independent of the fixed provider’s route, but validate the arrangement by disconnecting the primary connection during a test.

TRAI points subscribers to operators’ service-wise coverage maps. Use those maps to shortlist candidates for the exact studio location, not as proof of upload speed or reliability. Test the intended SIM, router placement and plan at the times the broadcast will operate. Check mobile data limits, renewal or recharge arrangements, and usage alerts directly with the operator. 3. Measure upload capacity on both routes
Check the encoder’s actual outbound bitrate, then verify that each internet path can sustain it with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test for long enough to reveal fluctuations and repeat during likely busy periods. A brief speed test, advertised download speed or coverage indicator does not establish sustained upload performance at the stream settings.

4. Protect the local equipment from short power cuts
A UPS can keep the router, modem and encoder running through a short interruption, but the required runtime depends on the actual equipment load and the likely outage. Measure the connected load, select a runtime appropriate to the site, and test the UPS with the whole setup attached. There is no universal battery-size or runtime figure that can be inferred without those measurements.
5. Test encoder and YouTube redundancy separately
YouTube documents a backup-encoder test: stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable, then check whether the player rolls over to the backup encoder. For HLS workflows, YouTube separately instructs streamers to copy the backup server URL when backup ingestion is needed. Run a controlled failover drill
- Set up the stream in advance. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and configure the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Use the exact server details shown for that stream. Keep the key private.
- Check the source and preview. Confirm the animation, sound and encoder output before going live. Check the stream from the channel/watch page and a mobile device, not only from the encoder preview.
- Verify upload headroom. Record the stream bitrate and confirm sustained upload capacity on both the primary and cellular routes, with 20% headroom as YouTube’s recommendation.
- Test WAN failover. While the encoder is active, disconnect fixed broadband and observe whether the router switches to cellular service and whether the public player recovers. Note any interruption and whether the encoder session resumes without manual action.
- Test backup encoder and ingestion paths. Follow YouTube’s backup-encoder procedure separately. If using HLS backup ingestion, verify that path separately too; do not assume an encoder test also proves WAN failover.
- Test backup power under load. Run the router, modem and encoder from the UPS and verify that the equipment stays on for the needed interval.
- Check viewer-side results and archives. Monitor stream health, picture and sound on the public player and check local recording/archive behavior. YouTube recommends checking local archive file growth during a stream. YouTube live streaming tips
Plan specifically for a 24/7 broadcast
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a 24/7 broadcast will remain one uninterrupted event or produce one continuous archive. Confirm the current event, restart and archive behavior for the channel and workflow you plan to use, and design an operational restart or scheduling process accordingly. Also check stream health during operation rather than relying only on a successful initial setup. YouTube advises checking both encoder/source health and outbound internet performance; if the encoder looks healthy but viewers have problems, the outbound connection may be at fault. Troubleshoot common interruptions
