In Your Dreams is a 2025 animated film about siblings Stevie and Elliot, who enter a fantasy dream world hoping to restore their family to an ideal state. Its emotional conflict is parental strain, not a story about teenage protagonists: the available coverage describes the siblings as children, and the film follows how they respond to worries they cannot resolve themselves.
What family conflict drives In Your Dreams?
Stevie wants to keep her family from breaking apart. After finding a book about the Sandman, whose dream-granting power sparks her imagination, she and Elliot set out on a quest shaped by a wish: that their parents’ relationship and family life could return to the way they want them to be. Plugged In’s synopsis and review describe the adventure as fantasy built around that wish.
The waking-world tension is recognizable rather than melodramatic. The parents disagree about the family’s future, including where they should live. Plugged In reads their disagreement as a clash between different ideas of what might help the family—not a simple division between a right parent and a wrong one. Another review describes Stevie noticing the distance between her parents and trying to repair a situation beyond her control. That is the reviewer’s interpretation of the story, not a clinical claim about children and parental conflict. Midgard Times’ review calls the conflict quiet and emotionally legible to young viewers.
How does the film balance nightmares with family drama?
The dream quest gives the children’s fears a vivid fantasy form, but the nightmares are not removed to make the story uniformly gentle. Director Alex Woo said the filmmakers “didn’t want to shy away from the darkness, or the nightmares, or the intensity of nightmares.” He also described wanting the film to work for children and adults, and connecting events in the dream world to details in the waking story so viewers could follow the shifts between them. That combination matters for families deciding whether the film suits a particular viewer: the fantasy contains scary dream sequences as well as moments of humor, while the emotional center is children confronting uncertainty at home. Plugged In identifies the film as PG and notes scary dream sequences, crude humor, and positive messages about courage. Those are the reviewer’s content observations, not an age-specific guarantee; a child’s sensitivity to frightening imagery can differ.
Are the protagonists teenagers?
The title’s “teen turmoil” framing can mislead. The available descriptions identify Stevie and Elliot as children, not teenagers. The film’s appeal for older viewers comes from its treatment of family life in flux and the limits of a child’s ability to change adult decisions, rather than from an established teen coming-of-age storyline. At the film’s premiere, cast member Simu Liu praised its portrayal of an “imperfect family,” asking, “because what family is perfect?” The San Francisco Chronicle reported Liu’s comment in its discussion with director Alex Woo.
