Jatla Siddharta’s Hindi-language feature In the Belly of a Tiger places a family’s struggle with poverty and exploitative labor inside a vivid, surreal fable. Its tiger is both part of a suspicious village death and a metaphor for the fear that consumes—and can galvanize—the people at the film’s center.
What is In the Belly of a Tiger about?
As described by Nandini Ramnath in Scroll.in, the story follows a family returning to its village after an unsuccessful period in the city. An elderly villager has recently died in circumstances involving a tiger, and suspicion surrounds the death. Meanwhile, the family faces hardship, and Saharsh works at a brick kiln where employees are treated like bonded laborers.
The film brings these pressures together as a rural fable rather than presenting the tiger episode as proof of a widespread real-world practice. Its difficult social setting is the ground from which the film’s dreams and surreal passages emerge.
How does the film depict rural suffering?
Color instead of a familiar visual shorthand
Siddharta uses saturated color and stylized imagery to depart from the visual approach often associated with films about deprivation. “Indian films that talk about poverty and suffering have a certain visual style, but I wanted a lot of colour,” he told Scroll. He also said, “I wanted to maintain the dignity of the characters.” The color is therefore not a denial of hardship; it is part of how the film represents people living through it without reducing them to their suffering.

Dreams alongside material hardship
The film sets external pressures—debt, precarious survival and kiln labor—against surreal sequences and dreams that Ramnath describes as representing memory and anticipation. That contrast gives the story room to move between the characters’ immediate circumstances and their inner lives.
What does the tiger mean?
The reported real-world inspiration and the film’s metaphor are distinct. Siddharta told Scroll that he investigated reports of people being eaten by tigers so their debt-ridden families could claim compensation. He found no truth in the incident he examined; the investigation instead brought him into contact with broader conditions of indigence, alcoholism and exploitative workplaces. The film’s tiger should not be taken as evidence that the reported scheme is common or established.

Within the fable, the tiger represents fear: a force that consumes the characters but also galvanizes them. The film also draws on the myth of Gajendra Moksha, in which Vishnu protects an elephant from a crocodile and frees it from the cycle of life and death. That myth places the tiger story within a symbolic frame of danger, rescue and release.
How was the film made?
Scroll reports that development and production took six years. Siddharta spent two years in a village near Uttar Pradesh’s border with Nepal, and the pandemic interrupted production before filming took place in 2022. He explained his framing choice this way: “I shot on the 1:85 aspect ratio because so much needed to be covered in the camerawork.”

The film is Siddharta’s follow-up to Love and Shukla. Scroll also reports that he met nearly 2,000 girls before casting Jyoti as Chatkila; that figure is a reported production detail, not an independently verified casting statistic.
The credited creative team includes co-writer Amanda Mooney, composer Shigeru Umebayashi and sound designer Resul Pookutty. Siddharta is a cinematography alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India. The film’s development involved NFDC Film Bazaar, Busan’s Asian Cinema Fund and the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum, according to Scroll.

Scroll reported that the film was scheduled for its world premiere in Berlin from February 17–21, 2024.
