Phillauri begins with an unwilling groom being told to marry a tree before he can marry his girlfriend. The tree is home to Shashi, a ghost bride whose earlier romance unfolds alongside the modern wedding story. Director Anshai Lal’s account of the film’s long development gives the unusual premise a second story: the idea had been discussed years before the film reached theaters.
What is Phillauri about?
The 2017 Hindi romantic comedy and fantasy follows Kanan, who returns to his family home for his wedding. Told that he must marry a tree first to counter his bad luck, he reluctantly goes through with the ritual. But the tree is inhabited by Shashi’s spirit, and she follows him into the household.

The film then moves between two strands: Kanan’s pressured, contemporary wedding and flashbacks to Shashi’s romance with Roop Lal. The setup makes the tree marriage more than a comic obstacle. It connects the modern wedding to a past love story, with humor in Kanan’s predicament and longing in Shashi’s history.
Shashi and Kanan are not presented as an ordinary present-day romantic pair. Their stories intersect because of the tree and the ghost’s presence, while the flashbacks reveal the relationship at the heart of Shashi’s past.

How the film brings comedy, romance, and the supernatural together
Phillauri resists a single narrow genre label: its wedding predicament supplies comedy, Shashi’s story brings romance and emotional longing, and her presence makes the premise supernatural. Lal put that difficulty plainly in a 2017 interview with Scroll: “I genuinely don’t know how to slot the film, because we don’t have a reference point for it.”
The ghost-bride premise prompted comparisons to Corpse Bride, but Anushka Sharma rejected the comparison, saying that a ghost and a love story did not make the films similar. It is more useful to understand Phillauri through its own contrast: a comic present-day wedding problem set against a romantic story from the past.

Sharma, who plays Shashi, described the appeal of portraying a ghost in a 2017 interview with Hindustan Times: “It was fun to play a non-living character because normally we play characters which are in the flesh and its boring to portray a living character in each film. You should keep doing a different thing. I think I’ve represented the ghost community well,”
Why Phillauri was years in the making
Lal told Scroll on February 11, 2017 that he first discussed the concept with producer Karnesh Sharma in 2009. They became occupied with other projects and returned to the idea some years later. Lal wrote a two-page treatment, which Anushka Sharma liked; he said the ensuing process involved about one and a half years of writing and six months of pre-production.

Those details explain the “years in the making” description, but they are not a single exact production-duration figure. The 2009 conversation, the later return to the idea, and Lal’s account of writing and pre-production are distinct parts of the timeline. The film was released theatrically on March 24, 2017.
