In Assam, Mekhela Sador’s Popularity Can Obscure Other Traditions

Mekhela sador is an important Assamese symbol, but it does not represent every community’s dress. Rini Barman’s reporting on Mising weaver Sumi Pegu explores what can be obscured.

Mekhela sador is an important Assamese garment, but it is not the traditional dress of every community in Assam. A 2019 report by Rini Barman follows Mising weaver Sumi Pegu to show how a widely recognized style can overshadow community-specific garments, weaving knowledge and motifs. Her account documents a cultural concern through reported examples—not a statewide count of traditions lost.

What is mekhela sador—and what does it represent?

Mekhela sador is commonly described as a two-piece Assamese attire. India’s official tourism site presents it as a traditional garment and highlights silk and weaving in Sualkuchi. Its visibility makes it a meaningful cultural symbol, but a single garment cannot stand in for the clothing practices of all the communities and regions in Assam.

The distinction matters because a familiar public image can become a default. In her Scroll.in feature, dated 8 February 2019 and reproduced in a UNFPA-hosted collection, Barman recounts expectations around wearing mekhela sador at cultural events and Bihu. She interprets that pressure as a form of standardization that can make other traditions less visible. This is the feature’s reported history and analysis, not evidence of an official dress policy.

What traditional dresses do different communities in Assam wear?

Assam’s textile traditions include garments with different names, forms and uses. IGNCA’s institutional overview discusses Assamese riha, mekhela and sador alongside distinct Bodo, Dimasa, Mech, Aitunia and Phake practices. The Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission’s ASOMI product list likewise names garments and textiles including dokhona, aronai, pajar and gale, as well as mekhela sador, riha, seleng sador and gamusa.

Those references establish variety, not a complete catalogue or a claim that every garment is exclusive to one community. Names and spellings can vary; terminology should be checked with the people who use it rather than treated as interchangeable labels.

Garment or practice What the cited sources establish
Mising ege Barman describes it as a waist-to-ankle garment woven by Sumi Pegu on a bamboo-and-wood back-strap loom. It should not be relabelled as mekhela sador.
Riha IGNCA includes riha-mekhela-sadar in its account of Assamese textiles. Barman discusses riha’s historical role and cautions against reducing dress to a standardized three-piece formula.
Koch/Rajbanshi patani Barman discusses patani forms in relation to community dress. The reported account does not establish a single form or use for all wearers.
Bodo, Dimasa, Mech, Aitunia and Phake practices IGNCA identifies these as distinct textile or dress traditions; the cited overview does not provide comparable garment details for each here.

Form and drape are part of the difference: a lower garment, an upper wrap and locally named layers need not fit a generic “three-piece” description. Barman’s reporting on Mising upper-body garments and Koch/Rajbanshi patani forms makes that point through specific examples, rather than treating Assamese women’s clothing as one uniform set.

Are Mising ege and mekhela sador the same?

No. In Barman’s account, ege is the Mising garment Sumi Pegu weaves, described as running from waist to ankle. The report also describes Mising upper-body garments and the techniques and motifs associated with Pegu’s work. Calling that work a mekhela sador would blur the community-specific garment and knowledge the story is about.

Pegu’s ege is made on a bamboo-and-wood back-strap loom, with weaving knowledge passed across generations. Barman describes motifs as carrying meaning and reports that the Mising diamond pattern was becoming smaller and less distinct in the fabrics she observed. She also notes motifs being combined differently. These are observations from the village in Sonitpur district that she visited, not measurements of textile change across Assam.

Why are traditional weaving designs changing in Assam?

Barman’s account connects changes in the Mising fabrics she saw to several pressures, not to one simple cause:

  • Mechanisation and mill-made cloth: The feature describes how these affected local fabric aesthetics, including the reported change to the diamond pattern.
  • Household labor: Weaving decisions sit alongside other work and responsibilities. The report connects production choices with the workload of households.
  • Market incentives: Makers must consider whether distinctive work will be recognized and sell. Barman reports Pegu’s concern that consumers might not recognize her ege as Mising.
  • Materials and dyeing: Pegu spoke of no longer being able to gather plants for natural dyes and expressed concern about artificially dyed thread sold in the market.

In Barman’s interview, Pegu described the physical cost of meticulous work: “You see this hunchback? It is testimony to my dedication towards the most meticulous of designs. I regret I cannot go into the wild now to collect plants that were used to naturally dye our threads. The artificially-dyed reels in the market are not to be trusted entirely.” The words convey one weaver’s experience; they are not a general assessment of every yarn or dye available.

Mechanisation does not automatically mean that handloom traditions have ended. The Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission says participating self-help-group weavers have begun using power looms to increase production, while listing a range of handloom products under ASOMI. That describes the mission’s activity, not an independent evaluation of craft outcomes or individual livelihoods. Change in production methods and continuing textile work can coexist.

Who gets recognition for motifs and textile knowledge?

Attribution is part of the tension Barman reports. A motif may be familiar in the market without consumers knowing which maker or community’s knowledge shaped a particular textile. Pegu was concerned that her work might not be identified as Mising and that the absence of a silk mark could affect its market prospects. She explained that she had reared the silk herself and that the motifs were distinctly Mising.

The feature presents recognition and ownership as a reported debate, not a settled ruling about who owns a motif. A careful description should name the maker and community where the source supports it, and should not turn a shared or borrowed design into a definitive claim of origin.

Have traditions been lost across Assam?

The available reporting supports a narrower, more useful conclusion: Barman documents how the popularity and standardization of mekhela sador can obscure other clothing and weaving practices, especially in her reporting on Mising weaver Sumi Pegu. The cited sources do not establish how many traditions have disappeared, how widespread the changes are, or that mekhela sador’s popularity alone caused them.

There are also signs of continuity and preservation intent. IGNCA describes household weaving as a traditional cultural practice and notes that mill products gradually replaced homemade cloth in urban areas. A Lakhimpur district government page describes Phatobihu as an event where people wear their own traditional clothes and says organizers seek to keep customs from being lost among younger generations. That is evidence of an aim, not proof that the effort has succeeded or that all communities participate in the same way.

The point is not to diminish mekhela sador. It is to keep the maker, community and particular garment visible alongside it. A prominent shared symbol can represent part of Assam’s cultural life without becoming a substitute for the many distinct practices that also belong to the state.
