IMDb’s most popular movie of 2024 was Deadpool & Wolverine, and its most popular show was True Detective. IMDb ranked the two categories separately using popularity meters based on page views—not ratings of quality, box-office totals, or measures of how many people watched each title.

What IMDb means by “most popular”
IMDb says its annual lists draw on IMDbPro MOVIEmeter and STARmeter rankings, which are based on page views from IMDb visitors. Its December 3, 2024 press release describes the audience as more than 250 million monthly visitors. That is IMDb’s stated monthly audience figure; it is not a count of viewers for the listed titles.
Rank #2
For the movie list, IMDb points to consistent performance on the MOVIEmeter chart among movies released in 2024. For shows, it points to consistent placement in weekly TV rankings among titles with new episodes that year. IMDb’s help page explains that MOVIEmeter ranks titles listed on IMDb and distinguishes that meter from the separate popularity ranking shown on an individual title page: MOVIEmeter and title popularity rankings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the lists do—and don’t—measure
- They measure popularity on IMDb. The stated basis is visitor page views and rankings on IMDb’s meters.
- They are not “best of” lists. IMDb says the year-end rankings are not based on professional critics’ reviews or small statistical samples.
- They do not rank box-office performance or viewing totals. A high IMDb ranking does not establish ticket sales, total streaming hours, or the number of people who watched a title.
- They do not make movie and show positions directly comparable. The categories use different eligibility rules and ranking approaches.
The lists therefore offer a snapshot of which titles drew the most attention on IMDb under its stated methodology during 2024. They should not be read as a measure of overall audience size or a judgment of artistic quality.
