How to choose from the list
The ranking tells you what McMillan preferred, while genre and premise can help you find a fit for tonight. For a literary adaptation, start with One Battle After Another; for a period story, try Hamnet or The Testament of Ann Lee. The horror picks range from the class disappearance in Weapons to the road-bound unease of It Ends and the supernatural, historically rooted story of Sinners. For a different mood, choose the spy marriage at the center of Black Bag, the filmmaking story in Nouvelle Vague, the afterlife romance in Eternity, or Superman.
McMillan also mentioned Withdrawal as his actual fourth-best film, but excluded it because it had not yet reached theaters or streaming when he wrote the list. It is not one of the ten ranked picks.
