Yes. Netflix’s iHostage is inspired by a real five-hour hostage crisis at the Apple Store on Amsterdam’s Leidseplein on February 22, 2022. An armed man demanded €200 million in cryptocurrency, and the hostage escaped after police sent a robot with water. The attacker pursued him outside and was struck by a vehicle driven by a member of the Dutch Special Interventions Service (DSI). He died in hospital the next day. The film follows key events but changes names and dialogue and compresses the story; it is a dramatization, not a documentary reconstruction.
What happened during the Amsterdam Apple Store hostage crisis?
At about 5:30 p.m. local time on February 22, 2022, an armed 27-year-old man entered the Apple Store on Leidseplein in central Amsterdam and took a customer hostage. Police evacuated about 70 people from the building. NOS reported that the hostage was a 44-year-old Bulgarian man; an initial NOS account had described him as British, but its subsequent reporting clarified his nationality.
The hostage taker demanded €200 million in cryptocurrency. The motive was not established in the reporting cited here, so the demand alone does not establish why he carried out the attack. NOS reported the incident as a hostage taking, not a confirmed attempted robbery. NOS’s February 23, 2022 reconstruction recounts the sequence of events.
How did the hostage escape?
Police initially treated the attacker as a possible explosive threat. Later findings reported by NOS said he had explosive material, but it was not armed; he also carried a handgun and a semiautomatic weapon. The hostage crisis lasted roughly five hours.

Near 10:30 p.m., police used a robot to bring water to the attacker. When the hostage moved to retrieve it, he ran. The attacker chased him outside, where a DSI vehicle struck the attacker. He was taken to hospital and died the following day. NOS’s report on the weapons and explosives describes what police later established.
What happened to the DSI officer?
The Dutch Public Prosecution Service reviewed the use of force and decided not to prosecute the DSI officer. Its June 10, 2022 statement said the intervention was justified and consistent with the applicable instructions. The review also noted that the officer did not know at the time that the explosives were unarmed.

The chief public prosecutor said: “Door zijn handelen heeft hij direct een einde gemaakt aan een zeer levensbedreigende situatie voor de gegijzelde en voor de achter zijn dienstvoertuig opgestelde politiemensen.” In English: “Through his actions he immediately ended a very life-threatening situation for the hostage and for the police officers positioned behind his service vehicle.” This was the outcome of a review of this particular incident, not a general rule about police use of force. The Public Prosecution Service’s statement gives its conclusion.

Netflix describes iHostage as inspired by the Amsterdam crisis. Director Bobby Boermans told TIME that the film follows many of the night’s real story beats, but condenses the timeline and changes dialogue and character names. He said hundreds of people were involved in the real standoff, while the film focuses on five central characters.

Those choices make the film a dramatization rather than a verbatim reconstruction. Its concentrated cast and compressed timeline help shape the incident into a thriller, but the real event involved a much larger response and unfolded over several hours. Netflix’s film feature introduces the production, while TIME’s interview with Boermans, published April 18, 2025, discusses the adaptation and the still-unclear motive.
