iHostage is a Dutch Netflix thriller inspired by the 2022 hostage crisis at an Apple Store in Amsterdam. It may appeal to viewers looking for high-pressure suspense like Drop, but the films tell very different stories: iHostage follows a hostage standoff and the emergency response, while Drop centers on a woman receiving threatening messages during a date.

What is iHostage about?

Netflix describes iHostage as a film inspired by true events, not a documentary or a television series. The story draws on the 2022 hostage situation at an Apple Store in Amsterdam and moves among the perspectives of the attacker, hostages and emergency responders. Netflix lists Bobby Boermans as director, Simon de Waal as writer and Horizon Film as the production company. The cast includes Soufiane Moussouli, Admir Šehović, Loes Haverkort, Marcel Hensema and Emmanuel Ohene Boafo.

The film premiered globally on Netflix on 18 April 2025. Its subject and multiple viewpoints give it a broader crisis focus than a thriller built around one person’s immediate predicament.

Is iHostage based on a true story?

Yes, it is inspired by the 2022 Amsterdam Apple Store hostage crisis. That wording matters: the film is a dramatized feature, not a documentary, and “inspired by” does not establish that every scene or character detail is a record of what happened.

Hostage/Ransom
  • HOSTAGE: Action superstar Bruce Willis powers a nail-biting thriller that crackles with action and suspense! When Jeff Talley (Willis) became chief of police in a sleepy town, he thought he'd left behind the traumas of his career as a big city hostage negotiator. But when a random crime escalates into a deadly standoff, Talley finds himself thrust into a situation far more volatile and terrify

Netflix’s Tudum account says the filmmakers investigated what happened inside the store, and that writer Simon de Waal spoke with police directly involved. Director Bobby Boermans recalled, “We both wondered what had really happened inside the store.” De Waal said, “I wanted to stay as close to the truth as possible.” Those statements describe the filmmakers’ approach and intentions; they do not make the finished film a verified factual record.

Is iHostage like Drop?

The useful connection is mood: both are suspense thrillers for viewers who want tension to build around a threatening situation. Their plots, settings and factual foundations are different.

Film Premise and scope What the comparison means
iHostage A hostage crisis inspired by a real event in Amsterdam, told through several perspectives, including hostages and emergency services. Suitable if you want a tense crisis story with a real-event starting point.
Drop The Associated Press describes a woman on a date receiving threatening messages on her phone. Suitable if you want a tighter, date-centered suspense setup; it is not the same kind of hostage or true-event story.

The Associated Press described Drop as a taut-paced thriller while noting implausibilities in its premise. Its review lists a 95-minute runtime and PG-13 rating. Those details apply to Drop, not iHostage.

What did critics think of iHostage?

The available reactions are mixed rather than a settled consensus. A Rotten Tomatoes snapshot retrieved in 2026 showed a 19% Tomatometer from 7 critic reviews. That is a small review sample and can change as more reviews are added. Metacritic’s retrieved critic page likewise showed a small group of positive, mixed and negative assessments.

These are critical judgments, not guarantees of how any particular viewer will respond.

Where can you watch iHostage?

Netflix announced a global premiere for the film and lists it in its catalog, but playback availability and catalog details can vary by country.
