IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is a six-episode Netflix dramatization of the 1999 hijacking, not a documentary. Its subject is both the ordeal inside the aircraft and the decisions made around it: passengers and crew faced immediate danger while officials confronted a fast-moving international crisis. The real hijacking began on December 24, 1999, and lasted seven days, ending in Kandahar.

IC 814 and the true story behind the series
Indian Airlines flight IC 814 departed Kathmandu for Delhi on December 24, 1999. Netflix Tudum’s account says five masked hijackers took control after the aircraft entered Indian territory. The plane made unplanned stops in Amritsar, Lahore, and Dubai before reaching Taliban-governed Kandahar. Tudum describes the hijacking as lasting seven days and says more than 175 passengers were aboard.

The story’s two scales—the confined space of the aircraft and the diplomatic response beyond it—are inseparable: the choices made by officials carried consequences for people who could not leave the plane.
What the series asks viewers to consider
Passengers and crew at the center
The title’s promise of a tribute to courage is best understood in the context of an ordeal imposed on ordinary people. Passengers and crew were not simply witnesses to a political crisis; they were the people living with its immediate risks. Netflix says Sinha and his team spoke with officials involved in the rescue effort as well as passengers and crew. That reported preparation is relevant context, but it does not make every dramatized scene a verified account.

Performances and the ensemble
Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, and Pankaj Kapur anchor the advertised cast, with a wider ensemble needed to carry a story split between the aircraft and the people managing the response. The performers’ names alone cannot settle how convincingly the series balances those worlds; viewers should judge whether the characters remain distinct and human rather than becoming pieces on a political chessboard.
Pacing and sustained tension
A six-episode structure has to make a week-long crisis legible without treating every stop or negotiation as interchangeable suspense. The central question for viewers is whether the series gives the ordeal enough room to register while keeping the shifts in location and decision-making clear. Its format gives the story space, but episode count by itself is no guarantee of momentum or depth.

The aircraft and the diplomatic response
The crisis unfolded on two connected fronts: the immediate experience of those aboard the plane and the negotiations and government decisions outside it. The series’ dramatic challenge is to make the connection clear without allowing official maneuvering to eclipse the passengers and crew, or reducing the larger crisis to background exposition. That balance is also where viewers may want to compare the dramatization with the captain’s account and contemporary reporting.
Why the series became controversial
Two distinct disputes followed the series’ release and should not be collapsed into one. First, viewers criticized its use of the hijackers’ aliases Bhola and Shankar. Netflix subsequently updated the opening disclaimer to say the series includes real and code names. The Indian Express reported that a Home Ministry statement dated January 6, 2000, confirmed those aliases were used.

Separately, the Indian Express described criticism of the series’ handling of the ISI’s role. That is a disagreement about historical framing and emphasis in a dramatization; it is not the same question as whether the aliases were documented. Reporting on the alias evidence does not, by itself, resolve every dispute about the series’ interpretation or omissions.

Flight into Fear: A Captain’s Story, by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury, is the directly relevant first-person source identified as the series’ basis. Reading it alongside the dramatization can help readers distinguish the captain’s account from choices made for a scripted series. Netflix’s release announcement identifies the book and credits the creators.
