Two men were arrested on suspicion of murder after former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins was found fatally injured at HMP Wakefield on 11 October 2025. The case later went to trial, but in May 2026 the jury was discharged and a retrial was ordered. The defendants denied the charges; the allegations remained unresolved in the latest cited reports.

The deceased was Ian Watkins, former lead singer of Welsh rock band Lostprophets. Contemporary reports said he was serving a 29-year sentence, with a further six years on licence, following convictions for child sexual offences. The Guardian and Associated Press reported that sentencing context.
Who was arrested, and what did the arrest mean?
The police announcement identified the two men by age, not by name. Later reports identified the defendants in the murder trial as Rico Gedel and Samuel Dodsworth. Both denied murder and possessing a knife in prison. An arrest on suspicion of murder is an investigative step, not a finding of guilt; the defendants’ denials and the later court proceedings did not establish that either was responsible.

When he agrees, he is incarcerated in the world's most secret and secure prison, and will need the help of a fellow inmate named Emil Rottmayer.
What happened in the murder trial?
On 22 May 2026, after the case was heard at Leeds Crown Court, the jury was discharged and the judge said the case would have to be retried. BBC News reported that Mr Justice Hilliard told jurors: “Very reluctantly, I’m going to discharge you and the case will have to be re-tried.” That statement concerned the jury’s discharge and the need for another trial; it was not a verdict on either defendant. BBC News court coverage reported the development.
Sky News reported that the retrial was scheduled to start on 8 February 2027. That is a reported listing, not a date independently confirmed here against a current court schedule, so it may have changed. Sky News reported the scheduled date.

What did the inquest establish?
An inquest hearing report said Watkins died after a stab wound to the neck. The inquest was opened at Wakefield Coroner’s Court and adjourned pending completion of the related murder trial. It was therefore not a completed inquest finding. BBC News reported on the inquest hearing.
