While watching classic comedies including Seinfeld and Friends, she found herself missing the format; the following week, she says, she got the call.
Why did Kat Dennings return to sitcoms?
In an interview with Christina Radish, republished by Filmibee on January 13, 2025, Dennings described the casting timing as a coincidence that felt almost fated. She had not publicly announced a plan to return to sitcoms. Instead, she says, the idea had been on her mind as she watched classic comedies, and then the Shifting Gears opportunity came along the following week.
“I wished for it, and it happened,” Dennings said. She also called working with Tim Allen a “once in a lifetime opportunity.” Those are her descriptions of the experience, not an independently verified account of how the casting process unfolded.
What is Shifting Gears about?
The sitcom pairs Matt, a widowed classic-car restoration shop owner, with his estranged daughter Riley, played by Dennings. Riley returns with her children, bringing their family relationship into Matt’s life and shop. Dennings said the premise brings together Allen’s character and the car-restoration setting with Riley’s perspective, elements that showrunner Michelle Nader’s writing connects.

What does Dennings say about the live studio audience?
Dennings said performing for a live audience initially intimidated her on 2 Broke Girls. She came to enjoy the format, though, and now sees the audience as a source of immediate feedback: laughter lets performers hear how a joke lands. “They feel almost like another character,” she said of the audience. “I think it’s the most fun thing ever.”
She contrasted the experience with smaller-film work she had done before 2 Broke Girls. In a live-audience sitcom, a joke’s reception is audible in the room. Dennings said Allen sometimes changes a joke, while Daryl “Chill” Mitchell may try a variation; writers can also provide alternate jokes for taping. She said she tends to stay close to the script.

The interview presents that ongoing creative relationship as part of Dennings’s enthusiasm for the sitcom, alongside the live-audience format and the chance to work with Allen.
