I Have a Name, a short documentary directed by Filipino filmmaker Ditsi Carolino, follows two mothers in Lanao del Sur, Philippines, as they seek birth certificates for their children. The film asks what it takes for every girl to count—not only in her community, but in the systems that shape access to education, health care and protection. Plan International Canada announced that the film would stream beginning October 11, 2026, for International Day of the Girl.
What is I Have a Name about?
Produced by Plan International Canada and Plan International Philippines through Plan’s Embedded Storytellers program, the film follows two mothers trying to secure official birth records for their children. It premiered at a Plan International Canada event in Toronto on October 1, 2026, and the campaign announcement said it would be available to stream from October 11 alongside a conversation guide. The announcement does not establish whether the stream or guide will remain available indefinitely.
The story centers on a basic but consequential gap: a child may be known to family and community while remaining absent from official records. Plan International Canada’s Vice President of Communications and Public Engagement, Dena Allen, put it this way: “This film shows how a girl can be here and still be treated as though she doesn’t exist.”
Why can a birth certificate matter?
Birth registration creates formal evidence of a child’s identity and age. Plan’s announcement says documentation can affect whether a girl can enroll in school, access medical care, prove her age in situations where that may help guard against child marriage or trafficking, and have her rights as a child recognized. A certificate is not, by itself, a guarantee of access or safety; Allen also cautioned that “A birth certificate is a critical first step, but it can’t erase the many barriers girls still face.”

The announcement cites an estimate that about 150 million children under five—roughly one in five worldwide—have no birth certificate. Plan International Canada does not name the original publisher or underlying dataset for that figure in the release, so it should be understood as the campaign’s cited estimate rather than an independently sourced statistic.
What does the film’s local project report?
Plan International Canada says it and local partners are bringing free birth-registration services closer to families in Lanao del Sur. According to the campaign release, partners had registered more than 400 children since May 2026 and expected to reach another 500 over the following year. Those are Plan’s reported project figures; the release does not provide an independent evaluation of the registration effort.

How does the story connect to International Day of the Girl?
International Day of the Girl is observed on October 11. UNICEF’s 2026 theme is “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights,” developed through consultations with girls and girl-led groups, civil society organizations and UN partners.
UNICEF’s 2026 estimates put the scale of child marriage in context: one in five girls worldwide are married before age 18, and about 650 million women and girls alive today were married in childhood. More than 12 million girls are married before adulthood each year—roughly one every three seconds, according to UNICEF. These figures describe child marriage, a broader issue related to girls’ rights; they are distinct from the birth-registration estimate cited by Plan.

Its 2026 figures further report that nearly one in four ever-married or partnered girls aged 15–19 have experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetime, and that girls aged 15–19 are twice as likely as boys to be out of education, employment or training.
What approaches does UNICEF identify?
UNICEF describes several ways to advance girls’ rights and help prevent child marriage, without ranking them by effectiveness or cost:

I Have a Name brings one part of that broader picture into focus: whether a child is officially recorded can shape how readily institutions recognize her identity and rights. The film’s emphasis on registration does not suggest that documentation alone can resolve the social and structural barriers girls face.
