Julianne Moore called the reported action a ban, but the evidence available in February 2025 described Freckleface Strawberry as caught up in a Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) review—not as permanently removed. DoDEA said access to materials under review was limited while the review was pending, and contemporaneous reporting did not establish that this specific book had been selected for withdrawal.
What Julianne Moore said about the book
On February 16, 2025, Moore posted on Instagram that she was shocked to learn her first book had been banned from Department of Defense schools. She described Freckleface Strawberry as semi-autobiographical and said she wrote it for her children and other children: a reminder that people struggle, but share humanity and community. Was it banned, or was it under review?
The accounts used different terms because they described different things. Moore characterized the reported action as a ban. DoDEA’s contemporaneous statement, reported by Lead Stories on February 20, 2025, said the agency was reviewing policies and instructional resources in light of executive orders and Defense Department guidance. Public affairs officer Michael O’Day said materials under review had access limited to professional staff and that none had been permanently removed pending completion of the review.
The Guardian reported that Freckleface Strawberry appeared on a list of titles caught up in the broad review. It also said it was not known whether the book had been selected for further review or withdrawal. That supports saying the title was caught up in the review; it does not establish that it was permanently banned or that it was ultimately selected for removal. What the book is about
Freckleface Strawberry follows a seven-year-old girl who dislikes her freckles and learns to live with them, according to Moore’s post. Bloomsbury describes the picture book as encouraging children to celebrate what makes themselves and others unique. What happened in court afterward
The dispute later became part of litigation over materials affected by the review. Publishers Weekly reported that a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction on October 20, 2025, ordering restoration of covered books and materials. On March 26, 2026, the publication reported that the court had denied the defendants’ motion to dismiss; the case remained pending in that account.
