Rather than offering a broad political survey, director Prabhash Chandra uses non-linear storytelling, theatre, poetry and restrained imagery to present one artistic perspective on life amid uncertainty and violence.
What is I Am Not the River Jhelum about?
Imagine India International Film Festival lists I Am Not the River Jhelum as an Indian film released in 2022, running 95 minutes, and Chandra’s first feature fiction work. Its young protagonist, Afeefa, lives in Kashmir. University screening descriptions frame the story around her personal struggle and trauma, and her growing understanding of the forces shaping her life in Kashmir and India. That is the film’s synopsis, not an independent verification of every political claim it portrays.

The character-led approach matters: Afeefa’s experience gives the film its anchor, rather than an attempt to account for the region as a whole. Chandra has acknowledged that views of the Kashmir conflict differ within the region and beyond it. The film is best approached as one filmmaker’s perspective, not a definitive record of Kashmir.
How does the film tell its story?
Scroll.in’s 2022 report describes a non-linear narrative that combines stylized acting, poetry readings and performance pieces. The form departs from conventional linear drama and naturalistic dialogue; theatrical passages and poetic expression are part of how the film conveys Afeefa’s experience.

In the report, ordinary activities such as going to school or stepping out on an errand are described as sources of anxiety. One performance sequence draws on Saadat Hasan Manto’s stories about women’s experience of Partition and places them alongside abuses in Kashmir. That is Scroll.in’s account of the sequence and Chandra’s explanation of his intent, not a claim that the film presents a comprehensive historical comparison.
Chandra told Scroll.in: “My training is in theatre, and I also wanted to draw parallels between Manto’s writing and what happens in places where there is insurgency.” He also described the characters’ modes of resistance: “The characters are not submissive, they resist through theatre, film and poetry.”

What does the film’s visual style convey?
The production company’s description presents the Kashmir Valley through grey tones, empty streets, soldiers and dim homes, set against dreams of astronomy and peace. This is the filmmakers’ intended visual framing, not an independently measured portrait of the region. The restrained imagery and quiet atmosphere reinforce the film’s interior, subjective approach rather than functioning as neutral documentary observation.
How does Article 370 fit into the film’s context?
Scroll.in reports that the film was conceived before 2019. The removal of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and associated protections that year forms part of the political context through which audiences may read the film, but it was not the original trigger identified by Chandra. He told Scroll.in: “I would have made the film even if Article 370 were still in place.”

That distinction helps keep the film’s scope clear: it can be considered in relation to the post-2019 period without reducing its story to a response to that change or treating it as a complete account of the region’s politics.
How was the film made, and where was it screened?
Scroll.in reported that cinematographers Anuj Chopra and Pratik D Bhalawala had completed 70% of shooting by January 2020. The pandemic then disrupted the already fund-strapped production, and Chandra operated the camera for some scenes. The 70% figure describes the reported state of the shoot at that point; it is not a statistic about the film’s content or Kashmir.

Scroll.in reports that the film premiered at the International Film Festival of Kerala in March 2022 and shared the FFSI KR Mohanan Award for Best Debut Director from India. The report also said it was scheduled for the Kolkata International Film Festival from April 25 to May 1, 2022. These are historical details reported by Scroll.in.
Later institutional records document educational screenings: Stony Brook University lists a screening and Q&A with Chandra on September 23, 2024, and George Mason University’s Visiting Filmmakers Series lists a screening and discussion on October 17, 2024. Those past events do not establish present-day access or booking options.

What is known about watching the film now?
Current authorized streaming, DVD or Blu-ray releases, and screening-license availability are not established by the available records. The documented university screenings show that the film has been presented in educational settings, but they do not confirm a current public screening or a route to obtain screening rights. Check with the film’s rights holder or a current official listing before making viewing plans.
How has the film been interpreted?
FIPRESCI-India critic Manoj Barpujari reads the film through trauma and metaphor and praises its empathetic stance. That is one critic’s interpretation, not evidence of a settled critical consensus. For viewers, the most useful distinction is between this character-centered, theatrical fiction feature and a broad political overview: the film’s personal scale and stylized form are central to how it approaches its subject.
