The report supports a casting change; it does not establish that Embiid’s potential appearance would have been awkward. That word is headline framing, not a reported reason for the change.
Why Joel Embiid did not appear in Hustle
The 2021 report said Embiid was originally slated for the film and was replaced by Garnett because of a scheduling conflict with the Sixers’ season. It does not describe a personal dispute, tension with the team, or any other source of awkwardness. The available account supports a straightforward explanation: the schedule did not work.
That change would have been notable because Embiid was the 76ers’ star center, and the movie is built around the team’s world. But the reported casting plan is not the same as a filmed or released cameo: Embiid did not take the role in the finished movie, while Garnett did.
What Hustle is about
Hustle is a 2022 Netflix sports drama starring Adam Sandler as Stanley Sugerman, a Philadelphia 76ers scout. While abroad, Sugerman discovers Bo Cruz, played by Juancho Hernangómez, and tries to bring him to the United States for a chance at the NBA. Netflix’s film overview describes that premise and the starring roles.

Which Sixers and Philadelphia figures appear
The film features several real basketball figures alongside its fictional story. A PhillyVoice report names Tobias Harris, Seth Curry, Matisse Thybulle, Tyrese Maxey, and coach Doc Rivers among the Sixers involved in cameos. Temple University’s account of the released film says Aaron McKie, a former Sixer and then Temple head coach, appears early in the movie. PhillyVoice’s premiere coverage also identifies 76ers marketing executive Brittanie Boyd and former general manager Billy King as cameo participants.
The same PhillyVoice report said Kyle Lowry was expected to cameo. That was a pre-release expectation, not confirmation that he appears in the released cut, so it should not be treated as a confirmed appearance on that evidence alone.
