Walt Disney World was initially open as Hurricane Milton approached on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, while Disney planned to close some campgrounds and rental cabins. That status changed: the four Florida theme parks closed early Wednesday, October 9, and the parks and Disney Springs remained closed Thursday. Disney later announced plans to reopen Friday after assessing storm impacts. This is a retrospective of that October 2024 sequence, not a current park-status update.
What closed at Disney World, and when?
Milton prompted a series of operational changes rather than one single closure announcement. Different parks, lodging areas, recreation venues, transportation services and events had different schedules.
| Date | Reported status | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday, October 8, 2024 | Walt Disney World remained open; closures were planned for campgrounds and rental cabins. | Disney and other Orlando-area parks were planning broader closures for Wednesday. The open status was specific to that day and changed as the storm approached. Associated Press, October 8 |
| Wednesday, October 9 | All four Florida Disney theme parks closed early. | Disney acted as the forecast track and storm conditions developed. Associated Press, October 10 |
| Thursday, October 10 | The theme parks and Disney Springs remained closed. | Some recreation facilities, transport services and a Halloween event were also affected, as detailed below. ClickOrlando, October 10 |
| Friday, October 11 | Disney announced plans to reopen the theme parks and Disney Springs after assessing property impacts. | This was the announced plan at the time, not a claim that every experience had returned to normal. Associated Press, October 10 |
Which resorts, recreation areas and services were affected?
ClickOrlando’s October 10 operational update listed the following Milton-related closures and service changes:
- Lodging: Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and the Treehouse Villas at Saratoga Springs were temporarily closed. The update said they were likely to remain closed until Sunday, October 13, but noted there was no official timeline for those locations.
- Water parks and miniature golf: Typhoon Lagoon, Fantasia Gardens and Fairways Miniature Golf, and Winter Summerland Miniature Golf were listed as closed through Thursday, October 10.
- Transportation: Walt Disney World transportation and Minnie Van service were reported temporarily unavailable Thursday.
- Blizzard Beach: It was already closed for planned refurbishment, so its closure was not attributed to Milton.
These are dated October 2024 reports, not a guide to current operating hours. ClickOrlando’s operational update records the details.

What happened to the Halloween party and tickets?
The Halloween party scheduled during the closure was canceled, and event tickets were to be refunded. The same contemporaneous report said partially used multi-day tickets would receive an adjusted expiration date of October 11, 2025. These were specific October 2024 arrangements, not standing ticket rules. ClickOrlando, October 10, 2024
Dining and other experience cancellation policies were not being enforced until further notice in that update; prepaid bookable experiences were expected to be refunded within 7–10 business days. Those details also apply to the notices issued at the time, not current policy.

What did Disney say about reopening?
On October 10, Disney said: “We’re grateful Walt Disney World Resort weathered the storm, and we are currently assessing the impacts to our property to prepare for reopening.” The company subsequently announced plans to reopen the theme parks, Disney Springs and potentially other areas on Friday, October 11, after assessment. The announcement described a plan; it did not establish that every resort, recreation venue or service resumed simultaneously. ClickOrlando, October 10, 2024 · Associated Press

ClickOrlando’s October 7 report reproduced Disney’s hurricane policy as it applied to that period. If a National Hurricane Center hurricane warning applied to the Orlando area or a guest’s place of residence within seven days of arrival, the policy allowed eligible guests to reschedule or cancel qualifying Walt Disney Travel Company resort packages and most direct Disney room-only reservations without Disney-imposed change or cancellation fees.
