Humans in the Loop makes AI data-labeling work—the human task of identifying and categorizing material used to train systems—part of an intimate story about family and community. Its central question is not whether a machine can interpret the world, but whose judgments teach it how, and whose experience is missing. Aranya Sahay’s film is fiction informed by reporting, not a documentary account of a particular workplace.
What is Humans in the Loop about?
The official film site describes a feature about an Indigenous woman hired to train AI in a remote Indian village. Its synopsis follows Geeta, whose ideas about how to treat AI and life clash with those of her tech-focused employer and US clients. Festival listings, however, identify the protagonist as Nehma, an Oraon woman. Because the sources use different names, it is safer to refer to the protagonist by the name used in the specific synopsis rather than assume they are interchangeable.
The premise brings a largely unseen kind of work into view: data labeling, in which people mark or categorize information so it can be used to train AI systems. The film’s official impact framing connects this labor to bias, including the effects of unrepresentative data and assumptions made when algorithms are written. That is a thematic dramatization, not a technical demonstration or empirical study of how a particular AI product was built.
How the film connects AI to labor and inherited assumptions
The strongest idea in Humans in the Loop is that machine interpretation begins with human choices. Labelers do not simply hand neutral facts to a system: the categories used and the examples included help define what it can recognize. The film uses its protagonist’s work to make that human layer legible, while its official impact goals explicitly call attention to under-recognized labor and bias tied to data and algorithmic assumptions.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This makes the title’s technological debate concrete without turning the story into a lecture about software. The people doing the labeling have knowledge and judgment of their own; they are not merely background figures in someone else’s innovation story. The film’s premise invites viewers to consider how a system’s apparent authority can rest on decisions made by people whose labor is rarely visible to the users of the finished technology.
Why the family story matters
The AI job is only one part of the film’s frame. The Hollywood Reporter India reads the mother-daughter relationship alongside Nehma’s effort to shape AI. India Today describes the film as bringing AI bias, invisible labor, gender, migration and Indigenous knowledge together through a personal story. Those are the reviewers’ interpretations, but they point to why the family dimension matters: the technology question reaches into lived relationships rather than remaining an abstract debate.

That approach can make the stakes more immediate, though it also asks the film to hold many themes at once. Its most productive tension is between the intimate scale of family and the larger systems that assign value to work and knowledge. The balance is part of the film’s ambition, not proof that one fictional family can stand in for every community affected by AI or data work.
Fiction informed by reporting—not a documentary
The Indian Express reports that Sahay wrote and directed the film in Hindi and Kurukh, and that it was inspired by journalist Karishma Mehrotra’s article “Human Touch” about tribal women in Jharkhand working as data annotators. The same outlet says Sahay chose fiction rather than documentary to make a more layered and engaging narrative. IFFLA describes the film as Sahay’s debut and emphasizes its attention to often-unrecognized labeling work by rural and semi-rural women in India.

That distinction matters for a documentary-minded audience. The film draws on reported work, but its characters and plot should be read as fiction, not as direct evidence of actual workplace conditions or as a comprehensive portrait of Oraon or Adivasi experience. FIPRESCI’s festival commentary discusses the film’s treatment of the Oraon community and landscape; this supports attention to how place and lived knowledge are framed, not a claim that one feature represents an entire community.
