Yes. Hulu’s “Up next” card can appear before an episode feels finished, especially during closing credits or a post-credit scene. In some user reports, the card appeared several minutes before the perceived ending. That does not prove Hulu is cutting every episode short: often the video continues underneath an overlay, while in other cases playback moves to the next title before the viewer has seen all the material.
The practical fix depends on what is missing. Disable Autoplay to stop automatic continuation, pause as soon as the card appears, and reopen or scrub through the episode’s final minutes if Hulu has already marked it complete.
What Hulu’s “Up next” counter actually does
The end-of-play experience combines several separate functions:
- Up next: recommends another episode or title.
- Countdown: shows how soon the recommended title may begin.
- Autoplay: determines whether Hulu starts that title automatically when the countdown reaches zero.
- End card: the visual panel or overlay that can cover the current video.
These functions are not identical. End-of-play systems can display a recommendation while the current video still has time remaining; technical documentation describes “Up next” as appearing when content is nearing its end, separately from the setting that automatically starts the recommendation (Deltatre’s end-of-play documentation).

A Hulu end-card design case study says the countdown can interfere with credits and post-credit scenes and was not always dismissible in the tested design (Hulu End Card UX case study).
First determine whether Hulu is hiding content or ending playback
- Note the remaining time when the counter appears.
- Check whether the progress bar still shows time left.
- Press Pause immediately.
- Scrub backward and forward around the point where the card appeared.
- Identify what is missing: credits, a post-credit scene, a recap or preview, a few seconds, or several minutes of the actual story.
If the episode continues underneath the card, Hulu is obscuring content rather than terminating playback. If it jumps to another title before the narrative ends, investigate the app, device, metadata, or video asset.
Reports are anecdotal, not evidence of a universal Hulu defect. Viewers have described counters appearing about five minutes early on selected episodes of Only Murders in the Building (user report) and transitions during credits or post-credit material on other shows (user report).

Credits may be treated as the effective endpoint
Hulu may time its end card from editorial metadata that identifies where the main program ends, rather than waiting for the final video frame. That can make the beginning of the credits look like the end.

Post-credit scenes are easy to miss
A platform can know an episode’s nominal duration without recognizing that a separate scene follows the main credits. The result is an apparently early recommendation or automatic transition.
Different versions have different runtimes
Broadcast, syndicated, international, ad-supported and ad-free versions can have different recaps, commercial timing, promos and credit lengths. A timing rule that fits one cut may appear early on another.
Apps and devices can render the card differently
Browser playback, mobile apps, smart-TV apps, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV and game consoles may not present or dismiss the card in the same way. One report described the behavior on one platform but not Apple TV; that is useful troubleshooting evidence, not a universal device rule (report).
Synchronization can create a false impression
One viewer associated an unusually early, 390-second countdown with captions appearing several minutes ahead (report). This is not established as a general Hulu cause, but testing with captions off is a sensible diagnostic step.

Turn off Hulu Autoplay
Hulu maintains a current Manage Autoplay help page. The historically documented path is:
- Open your Hulu profile.
- Choose Settings.
- Find Autoplay.
- Set it to Off.
Hulu announced that control on June 8, 2017 (official announcement). Labels and locations can vary by app version and device. If you cannot find it, update Hulu, try the website in a browser, or contact support.
Important limitation: turning Autoplay off may prevent the next episode from starting without removing the Up next artwork. User reports describe the overlay remaining with Autoplay disabled (report).

What to do when the counter appears
Immediate recovery
- Press Pause as soon as the counter appears.
- Try the remote’s Back, Exit or Close control. Button behavior is device-dependent; some controls leave playback instead of dismissing the card.
- If the card cannot be removed, exit playback and reopen the episode.
- Use the episode page to scrub to the final minutes instead of relying on Continue Watching.
- If Hulu marked the episode complete, open the series page and select the episode manually.
For credits and post-credit scenes
- Disable Autoplay before starting the episode.
- Pause rather than selecting the recommended title.
- Reopen or scrub back to the ending if the card covers the picture.
- In a browser, test moving the pointer away from the player or clicking the playback area; these are platform-specific experiments, not guaranteed Hulu controls.
If the actual story ends early
When narrative content is missing rather than only credits, work through this order:

- Replay the episode.
- Test another browser or device.
- Temporarily disable captions.
- Restart the Hulu app.
- Sign out and back in.
- Update Hulu and the device software.
- Clear the app cache where the device supports that option.
- Record the show, season, episode, profile, subscription type, device, app version and exact timestamp, then contact Hulu.

No reliable current device-wide rule or app-version-specific fix has been established. A problem on one title points toward episode metadata or that video asset; a problem across titles on one device points toward the app, device or account; behavior across devices and profiles makes a Hulu-side issue more plausible, but still does not confirm a service-wide bug.
Do not confuse “Up next” with other skip controls
- Skip intro jumps over an opening sequence.
- Skip credits, where offered, jumps over closing credits.
- Up next recommends or queues another title.
- Autoplay starts that title automatically.
- End card is the visual panel shown near the end.
A movie can also receive an end card after its main content, although the available reports are stronger for television episodes than for Hulu films. Live-TV or DVR playback, bonus features, previews, anthology transitions, child profiles and region-restricted next episodes may follow different rules.

Contact support when the story itself is truncated, the issue repeats after app and device troubleshooting, or the same episode fails across multiple devices. Include:

- Show, season and episode title
- Timestamp where the card appeared
- Whether the missing material was narrative, credits or a post-credit scene
- Device model, operating system and Hulu app version
- Profile and subscription type
- Whether captions were enabled
- What happened after pausing, reopening and testing another device
There is no official Hulu statement confirming a universal defect in which all episodes are cut short. The defensible conclusion is narrower: some viewers experience premature end-card behavior that can obscure credits, post-credit scenes and, in some reports, earlier story content.
Alternatives for viewers who need stronger end-of-play controls
Plex’s Android TV settings document a “Manually” option for credit skipping and more explicit post-play controls. Plex is primarily a personal-media/server platform, not a replacement for Hulu’s licensed catalog; it requires your own media and additional setup.
Tubi’s Autoplay help documents controls that can hide its Up next overlay. Tubi is a free, ad-supported service with a different catalog and availability, so it is not a like-for-like Hulu substitute.
