They are convenience upgrades—not automatic discounts—and the add-on fee is charged on top of your Hulu plan. Premium services may also require a separate app, so compare the catalog you need, duplicate subscriptions, and how long you will keep the option.

Hulu separates premium services from Live TV channel packs and feature upgrades. The premium lineup is listed on Hulu’s premium networks page; Live TV options appear in Hulu’s Live TV customization.

Hulu may show different options for a standard subscription, a bundle, or Hulu + Live TV. Unlimited Screens is a separate Live TV feature upgrade rather than a content catalog; verify its current price in your account.

Are Hulu add-ons worth the money?
Judge an add-on by usage, not by the size of its channel list. Keep one when someone in the household watches an ongoing series or several films every month, multiple people use it, or the Hulu bill is a useful way to consolidate accounts. Rotate it when you only need one season, a short movie run, or a limited set of titles.
A simple break-even calculation
Divide the monthly fee by the hours your household expects to watch: monthly price ÷ expected viewing hours = cost per hour. For example, $9.99 CINEMAX watched for 10 hours is about $1.00 per hour; $11.99 STARZ watched for four hours is about $3.00; $13.99 Paramount+ with SHOWTIME watched for eight hours is about $1.75; and $10.99 HBO Max Basic with Ads watched for six hours is about $1.83. These are usage illustrations, not quality ratings.
Four premium options—HBO Max Basic with Ads, CINEMAX, Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, and STARZ—would add $46.97 per month before tax and before the base Hulu charge. Keeping an option for only two or three months can cost far less than leaving it active for a year, provided you cancel through the correct billing provider.

Premium add-ons: what you actually receive
HBO Max
Hulu offers HBO Max Basic with Ads and Standard. They provide HBO series, films, specials, and Max programming through Hulu, while Standard also supports HBO live streams on supported devices. Hulu says additional content requires the HBO Max app, which you activate by selecting Hulu as your provider. HBO programs cannot currently be recorded to Hulu Cloud DVR, and the base Hulu plan’s two simultaneous screens and premium-service screen rules are separate considerations. This is the broadest premium choice for a regular HBO/Max viewer. Compare the Hulu-billed tier with any Max subscription or bundle you already receive, especially if you need the complete Max app, a different tier, or features not included through Hulu.
Paramount+ with SHOWTIME
At $13.99 per month, this option is aimed at Showtime originals and films plus selected Paramount+ originals available in Hulu. Hulu identifies additional Paramount+ programming as available only through the Paramount+ app; see the service listing. It suits a committed Showtime viewer already using Hulu, but a household seeking the full Paramount+ catalog may prefer a direct subscription and its complete app experience.

STARZ
STARZ supplies its originals, movies, and docuseries for $11.99 per month on Hulu. It is a strong seasonal choice: add it while a favored series is running or while you are watching its movie library, then remove it between viewing periods. Occasional viewers should not assume a year-round fee is justified.
CINEMAX
CINEMAX costs $9.99 per month and is primarily a film-library decision, with original series included. It makes sense for a household watching its movies consistently; otherwise it is the easiest premium option to rotate. Hulu lists it with the other Live TV and premium choices at hulu.com/live-tv.
Live TV add-ons and screen upgrades
Sports Add-on
For $9.99 per month, Hulu describes this pack as including NFL RedZone during the NFL regular season and specialty programming such as motorsports, horse racing, hunting, and fishing. It is not every league’s out-of-market package, does not guarantee every game for a team, and does not remove regional blackouts or other rights restrictions. Hulu’s network page and Live TV page contain the current terms.

Entertainment Add-on
The $7.99 pack is useful when several household members watch its specialty networks. Representative listings include American Heroes Channel, BET Her, Boomerang, Cooking Channel, Crime + Investigation, Destination America, Discovery Family, Discovery Life, Hallmark Family, Military History Channel, MTV2, MTV Classic, Nicktoons, Science, and TeenNick. Check that your plan and market include the particular channels you want before subscribing.
Español Add-on
For $4.99 per month, Hulu lists CNN en Español, Discovery en Español, Discovery Familia, ESPN Deportes, History Channel en Español, and Universo. Compare the pack with your actual need—one sport, children’s programming, or a broader Spanish-language lineup—and confirm local availability.
Unlimited Screens
Unlimited Screens changes simultaneous viewing rather than adding programs. Hulu says standard Hulu permits two simultaneous screens. On Hulu + Live TV, the upgrade changes supported stream limits; Hulu describes up to five screens for other premium add-ons, with up to three of those screens able to be out-of-home mobile devices. It is not an unlimited-device or unrestricted-away-from-home pass.

When a direct subscription is better
Choose the provider directly when you need its complete catalog, a tier Hulu does not offer, annual billing, downloads, profiles, 4K, or other app features not clearly included in the Hulu-billed version. Direct billing can also be preferable if you already receive a discount or free subscription through a wireless, internet, retail, Apple, Amazon, Roku, Google Play, or smart-TV account.
Hulu billing is more convenient when you already maintain Hulu and only need the integrated selection. Do not call it cheaper without checking same-day direct pricing: the direct HBO Max, Paramount+, STARZ, and CINEMAX prices were not verified here.
Check for duplicate billing before you add anything
- Review your Hulu bundle and current plan.
- Search household members’ direct Max, Paramount+, STARZ, CINEMAX, or other subscriptions.
- Check Apple, Amazon, Roku, Google Play, smart-TV, wireless, and internet-provider billing.
- Confirm whether the Hulu option supplies the catalog and app access you actually need.
HBO Max’s support documentation identifies Hulu as a third-party billing route and tells Hulu-billed customers to manage the subscription through Hulu: billing guidance.
How to add, activate, or cancel an option
Add or manage an add-on
- Sign in at Hulu.com.
- Open hulu.com/account.
- Select Manage Plan, Manage Plans & Add-ons, or the equivalent control currently displayed.
- Choose the add-on, review the new total and plan terms, and confirm.
- If Hulu directs you to another app, activate that app using Hulu as the billing provider.
Hulu’s Help Center directs subscribers to Manage Plans & Add-ons. Labels can differ when a partner bills your account or your base plan is ineligible.
Cancel
Cancel through whoever bills the option. Hulu-billed add-ons are removed in Hulu’s account controls; partner-billed subscriptions must be canceled with that partner. For HBO Max purchased through Hulu, Hulu says online or phone cancellation leaves access through the end of the billing cycle. Mid-cycle changes may create a prorated charge or credit, so rely on the checkout screen and current billing terms rather than assuming a universal refund.
Best picks by viewer type
- HBO/Max fans: HBO Max, if you regularly use its catalog and accept the separate-app content.
- Showtime viewers: Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, especially when Showtime is the priority.
- Seasonal subscribers: STARZ for a series run or CINEMAX for a concentrated movie period.
- NFL RedZone households: Sports Add-on, subject to rights, blackout, and regional limits.
- Spanish-language viewers: Español Add-on when its listed channels match your needs.
- Families seeking specialty channels: Entertainment Add-on only when several included networks will be watched.
- One-show households: Subscribe for the show’s run, set a cancellation reminder, and avoid paying through unused months.
Before you click confirm
- Do I already pay for this service somewhere else?
- Which exact shows, channels, or games will we watch this month?
- Will any required content open in a separate provider app?
- Is the option available with my Hulu plan and ZIP code?
- Could blackouts, regional restrictions, or DVR limits affect the content?
- Which company bills it, and when will I cancel?
Hulu add-ons work best as targeted, reversible choices. If you cannot name the viewing need they solve this month, leave the option off and rotate it in when the catalog becomes useful.
