Hulu Support said on January 3, 2025, that it was investigating a bug causing ads to freeze. Viewers had reported symptoms including stalled ad timers, black screens, crashes and playback that had to be restarted. That acknowledgment was about freezing; it did not specifically confirm that Hulu had a bug replaying the same commercial. Repeated ads are a documented complaint, but seeing one again does not by itself establish why it happened.
What Hulu acknowledged—and what it did not
A contemporaneous report said Hulu Support posted on X on January 3, 2025, that it was “currently investigating” behavior causing ads to freeze. The report described viewers encountering frozen timers, black screens, app crashes and forced restarts across devices including Fire TV, gaming consoles and smart TVs. Those are user-reported symptoms, not a published device-by-device diagnosis. Tech Issues Today’s account of Hulu’s response did not include a technical explanation or a date for a fix.
The distinction matters: Hulu’s reported response confirmed an investigation into freezing behavior, not a general admission that its ad system was deliberately or incorrectly selecting the same commercial repeatedly. The available reporting does not establish whether that investigation later resulted in a fix, nor does it identify a compensation policy.
Repetition and an ad loop are not the same symptom
| What you see | How to interpret it cautiously |
|---|---|
| The same commercial appears in separate breaks | Repeated ad rotation or a frequency issue is possible. Repetition alone does not prove a playback bug. |
| The same commercial runs twice back-to-back | An ad-pod or inventory issue is possible, but the pattern alone does not establish the cause. |
| An ad starts, but its timer stops or the screen goes black | This resembles the freezing behavior Hulu Support was reported to be investigating. |
| The app crashes during an ad, then the ad or break returns | A playback or device-compatibility problem is possible; a restarted session can also replay an ad without proving it was intentionally selected again. |
| Rewinding or resuming leads to the ad break again | The player may have returned to a point before an ad marker, or playback may have malfunctioned. Which explanation applies depends on the title, device and position. |
| Promos or public-service announcements repeat on one live channel | That may involve channel or local ad inventory rather than the same selection process used for an on-demand Hulu library title. User reports are anecdotal, not Hulu’s official explanation. |
A 2022 Whip Media survey, as reported by The Desk, found that 73% of surveyed Hulu ad-supported viewers said they saw the same advertisements repeatedly. That is evidence of viewers’ reported experience, not a measurement of technical failures or proof that all Hulu viewers encounter the problem. The Desk’s report on the survey.

Why the same commercial can recur
More than one mechanism can produce repetition, and the visible result does not reveal which one occurred. Ad selection can be constrained by the viewer’s location, program, device, live channel or available campaign inventory. A limited pool of eligible ads can make repetition more noticeable. In live TV, network or local replacement spots may differ from ads inserted into Hulu’s on-demand library. Binge viewing can also make several breaks—and repeated creatives—feel concentrated in a short period.
Playback problems add another possibility: an ad break may reload after a crash, failed resume or return to a point before the break. Conversely, different versions of a campaign may look nearly identical to a viewer while being treated as separate creatives by an advertiser or ad system. None of these possibilities can be diagnosed from repetition alone; it does not establish that Hulu counted duplicate impressions, ignored a cap or charged an advertiser improperly.

Bloomberg reported in 2021 that Hulu described a same-commercial limit of two exposures per hour, four per day and 25 per week, while noting that ads sold by third parties could exceed those limits. These are historical figures reported in 2021, not a verified current, universal guarantee for every ad, device, household or live-TV pathway. Bloomberg’s 2021 report on streaming-ad frequency.
Repetitive advertising is not unique to Hulu. Bloomberg’s reporting discussed similar complaints and ad-market complexity across several streaming services. That industry context does not identify the cause of a particular Hulu viewer’s repeated ad.

Which Hulu viewing can still include ads?
Hulu’s current plan language distinguishes its streaming library from live-TV programming. An ad-free library experience excludes ads from most library content, but rights-related exceptions can include a short break before or after an episode. Hulu + Live TV programming continues to carry ads in live and on-demand content provided through the Live TV plan. Hulu’s plan information and ad-exception language.
So upgrading to an ad-free library plan may reduce interruptions for eligible library titles, but it is not a verified fix for frozen playback, and it does not remove ads from every Live TV context. Before changing plans, compare where the repetition occurs: a Hulu library episode, network VOD, a recorded program or a live channel.

How to narrow down and report the problem
- Record the pattern. Note the date and time, program and episode or channel, ad name if identifiable, device, Hulu plan, and whether the ad merely repeats or the timer freezes, screen turns black or app crashes. Capture a short recording if practical and permitted.
- Fully close and relaunch Hulu. Exit the app rather than only returning to the device home screen. This is a reversible check, not a guaranteed fix.
- Restart the streaming device. A restart may clear a temporary playback or ad-session error, but Hulu has not been reported as confirming it resolves the known behavior.
- Clear the app cache if your device supports it. Hulu Support reportedly suggested cache clearing as a possible step, but the cited report does not provide one universal menu path for every device. The reported troubleshooting suggestion.
- Compare another device or platform. If the issue occurs on only one device, the app, firmware or platform integration may be involved. If it follows the account across devices, a server-side, account, campaign or regional factor becomes more plausible, but that still does not prove a specific cause.
- Try another program or viewing type. Check whether the behavior is limited to one title, one live channel, live viewing, network VOD or a recording. For Live TV, comparisons across live and recorded playback can help describe the scope.
- Contact Hulu Support with the details. Include the device model, operating-system and Hulu app versions, exact title and timestamp, and ad creative if identifiable. Ask whether support can associate the case with the ad-freezing investigation reported in January 2025.
Repeatedly skipping, rewinding or restarting is not a dependable cure: viewers have reported that those actions can trigger another break or reproduce the loop. Include what you tried in the support report instead of assuming a restart proves the issue is resolved.

Hulu Support’s reported January 3, 2025 response acknowledged an investigation into ads freezing. Repeated commercials are also a documented viewer complaint, but the public acknowledgment cited here did not identify repetition itself as the confirmed bug. Without a published root-cause explanation or verified fix date in the available account, the useful next step is to distinguish a recurring ad from a stalled or crashing ad session and give Hulu enough detail to reproduce the symptom.
