The first trailer for The Death of Robin Hood presents Hugh Jackman as a battered outlaw facing the consequences of a violent life—not the familiar, carefree champion of the poor. The film is directed by Michael Sarnoski and is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 19, 2026. Calling it Jackman’s “most serious role in over a decade” is a promotional-style judgment, not a comparison established by the available reporting; what the trailer does make clear is that this Robin Hood story is built around guilt, survival and the possibility of redemption.

What the first trailer shows

Released by A24 on January 6, 2026, the first official trailer introduces Jackman’s Robin as gravely injured after a battle. The images and premise point toward a stark, physical drama: this is a man forced to reckon with what he has done, rather than a confident folk hero setting out on another adventure. A24 initially listed the film’s timing as “Coming Soon.”

The trailer’s central tension is whether Robin can find a way forward after a life marked by crime and murder. A mysterious woman offers him a chance at salvation, but the official synopsis frames that offer as a confrontation with his past—not an easy escape from it.

What The Death of Robin Hood is about

Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, the 2026 film reimagines the Robin Hood legend as a story of violence, regret and possible redemption. A24 describes Robin as gravely wounded after a battle and haunted by his history of crime and murder. The film’s premise makes survival—not generosity—the context for his past as an outlaw.

That approach differs from the popular image of Robin Hood as a swashbuckling hero who robs the rich to help the poor. The Associated Press describes the film as a revisionist departure from that familiar heroic tradition. Variety’s interview with Sarnoski likewise presents his Robin as haunted and guilt-stricken, with his crimes understood as acts of survival rather than charity. Those descriptions characterize this adaptation; they should not be taken as a summary of every version of the Robin Hood legend.

Who is in the cast?

A24 names five principal cast members:

  • Hugh Jackman as Robin Hood
  • Jodie Comer
  • Bill Skarsgård
  • Murray Bartlett
  • Noah Jupe

Sarnoski has spoken about his long-standing interest in the legend, telling Variety, “I loved the legend since I was a little kid,” in reference to Robin Hood and the ballad of his death. He also said, “Hugh understood the character.” Those are the director’s explanations of his connection to the story and his casting choice, not independent critical consensus about Jackman’s performance.

Is this Jackman’s most serious role in over a decade?

The headline phrase is a judgment, and the cited reporting does not establish it through a comparison with Jackman’s roles over the past decade. The evidence here supports a narrower description: Sarnoski’s film gives him a gravely injured, remorseful outlaw in a dark, revisionist story. Whether that is his most serious role in a particular period depends on how “serious” is defined and which performances are compared.

When does The Death of Robin Hood come out?

A24’s April 22, 2026 promotional announcement lists June 19 as the theatrical release date. The Associated Press’ 2026 summer movie calendar also lists June 19. Treat that as the announced date; release timing and exhibition can differ by territory.
