Howie Mandel objected when Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos praised how he looked after noting that he had recently turned 70. He said the compliment sounded qualified by age; the moment turned playful, and Mandel later apologized to Ripa, saying his joke was not meant to offend.
What happened on Live with Kelly and Mark?
The exchange aired on the March 23, 2026 episode. Consuelos congratulated Mandel on turning 70 in November 2025. Ripa said his age “doesn’t make any sense,” and Consuelos added that he looked great.
Mandel replied, “I don’t like that, because that’s a caveat.” Ripa clarified that she meant he looked great, not merely good for his age. Mandel maintained that the wording still carried a qualification. He illustrated his point with the line, “You’re smart, for a stupid person.”
The conversation then eased into a joke: Consuelos repeated that Mandel looked good, and Mandel answered, “I’m gorgeous.” TV Insider’s March 25 recap described the hosts as appearing taken aback; The Daily Beast also recounted the exchange.

Why did Mandel call the compliment a caveat?
Mandel’s objection was to the age reference attached to praise about his appearance. He treated “you look great” in that context as praise with an implied qualifier—rather than as an unreserved compliment. Ripa clarified that she meant he looked great, while Mandel played up the ambiguity for comic effect.
The reports do not establish that Ripa or Consuelos intended an insult. The moment was a brief, awkward exchange about how a compliment can sound when tied to someone’s age, and it ended on a joking note.

What did Mandel say afterward?
In an Instagram video covered by The Daily Beast on March 30, Mandel said, “It is a joke, it is meant as a joke, and it’s not meant to offend.” He apologized directly to Ripa, saying, “I’m sorry to Kelly,” and “you’re absolutely right.” He also described her as supportive of him over the years and ended the video with another joke about looking great for his age.
