YouTube live streams can earn from ads, YouTube Premium viewing, and separate fan-funding features—but none guarantees a payout for each view or an ad for each viewer. To enable ad opportunities, the channel must be monetized and monetization must be turned on for the stream. Creators then choose how to handle mid-roll breaks, balancing YouTube’s recommended automatic placement against more control over timing.
How live-stream ad revenue works
When a channel is monetized and monetization is enabled for a live stream, YouTube can serve ads. Pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled with live-stream monetization. Mid-roll ads can appear during the broadcast as fullscreen or side-by-side ads; side-by-side placement is automatic on eligible streams, and streams with captions turned on will not show side-by-side ads. YouTube’s systems decide whether to fill available ad slots, taking account of viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values. An available slot is an opportunity, not a promise that an ad will run.
Viewers who are not served an ad continue watching the stream. A viewer who sees an ad returns to the stream when the ad ends or when they skip it. YouTube explains live ad delivery and suitability in its live ad guidance.
Choose how to place mid-rolls
YouTube offers automatic, scheduled, and manual mid-roll settings. The best fit depends on the stream: a continuous documentary screening may call for fewer interruptions, while a hosted program may have natural breaks. These controls affect when breaks may be offered; they do not guarantee that YouTube will serve an ad.

What automatic mode does for viewers
Automatic mid-rolls include safeguards intended to reduce disruption: they limit ad interruptions for channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers who send gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snooze mid-rolls for all viewers during high-engagement moments. In Live Control Room, a creator can delay automatic mid-roll ads for 10 minutes. YouTube says manually placed ads still display when this delay is enabled.
What YouTube’s reported uplift means
YouTube Help reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour. YouTube says the January 2024 comparison averaged channels across 207 countries, comparing those that turned on automatic mid-rolls with those that did not. How YouTube Premium revenue works
Premium revenue is separate from ad impressions. When a YouTube Premium subscriber watches eligible long-form or live-streaming content, the creator may receive a share of the subscriber’s fee. YouTube does not give a fixed per-view amount or a simple payout formula in its monetization options guidance.
To earn Watch Page ad and Premium revenue for long-form or live-streaming Watch Page views, including eligible views embedded in the YouTube player on other sites, creators must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. The Watch Page includes playback pages on YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids.

Keep fan funding separate from ads and Premium
Channel memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers are additional sources of revenue, governed by the Commerce Product Module and eligibility for the individual feature. Memberships are recurring payments in exchange for creator-defined perks. Super Chat and Super Stickers are paid live-chat features. They are not ad revenue or Premium revenue. Understand RPM, CPM, and what they do not tell you
RPM and CPM describe different sides of monetization, so they are not interchangeable. YouTube defines RPM as a creator-focused measure of revenue reported in Analytics after revenue share per thousand views. For videos, it includes all views and can include revenue from ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. CPM is advertiser-focused: it relates to ads and Premium, counts monetized playbacks, and is before revenue share. Neither metric alone captures every detail of what a channel earns. Use that channel-specific reporting to assess how your own settings and audience are performing rather than treating a platform-wide comparison as a personal estimate.
