Ryan Reynolds made the approach that brought Wesley Snipes back as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine. Snipes said he had assumed a return was unlikely after earlier conversations led nowhere and Marvel was moving ahead with Mahershala Ali as a new Blade. Then Reynolds texted him, explained the idea, and the team told Snipes: “If you’re in, we’re in.”
How did Ryan Reynolds bring Wesley Snipes back?
In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly published July 26, 2024, Snipes said there had been previous discussions about reprising Blade, including some he considered substantial, but none became a project. After making three Blade films, he had decided to move on.
Reynolds, who had appeared alongside Snipes in Blade: Trinity, sent him a text: “I want to talk to you.” Snipes said his first reaction was that a return could not happen: “I did not think it was possible.” He understood that Marvel was developing a new Blade with Mahershala Ali, and doubted Marvel and Disney would want him back in the role.
Snipes took Reynolds’s call and listened to the pitch. The team’s answer, he recalled, was: “If you’re in, we’re in.” He accepted. The key change was not a new Blade project replacing the one in development, but an invitation to appear as Snipes’s Blade in Reynolds’s film.

Why was the cameo framed as a legacy moment?
Director Shawn Levy said the return was an early idea from Reynolds. In an interview with Variety published August 6, 2024, Levy said, “Wesley’s return as Blade was a very early idea of Ryan’s.” The filmmakers wanted the appearance to recognize the history Snipes brought to the character, not to make him the target of a joke. Levy described the intent as “out of reverence for his legacy as this iconic character.”
That context matters for interpreting the exchange about there being only one Blade. Levy said the line, “There’s only been one Blade. There will only ever be one Blade,” was scripted, and that Snipes thought it was funny. It is a character moment in this film—not evidence of a dispute with Ali, a rejection of the newer version, or a promise about future casting.

Snipes said in the EW interview that he had not spoken with Ali after the reboot stories appeared. He recalled publicly congratulating Ali when his casting was announced and offering support, adding that the difficulties surrounding the project should not be blamed on Ali. The available interview accounts support goodwill toward the actor, not a feud.
What happens in the Blade scene?
Spoiler: Snipes appears as Blade among a group of returning Marvel-film characters in the Void. In the sequence described by Entertainment Weekly, Blade joins Elektra, Gambit, X-23, Deadpool, and Wolverine in a fight against Cassandra Nova and her group. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the cameo mean Snipes will play Blade again?
No future return is confirmed by the comments cited here. Levy described Deadpool & Wolverine as a standalone story, and a cameo or a scripted line about Blade’s singular place in film history is not a commitment to another appearance or a new movie.
