Val Kilmer said the reputation began around The Doors, where he immersed himself in playing Jim Morrison and sang the songs live. But the label became attached to reported conflicts on Batman Forever and, most insistently, the troubled production of The Island of Dr. Moreau. Kilmer disputed important stories about his behavior. The record is a mix of his own explanations and other people’s accounts—not a settled verdict on every allegation.
Why Kilmer said the reputation began with The Doors
In a 2017 interview with The Guardian, Kilmer put the beginning plainly: “I guess it started around The Doors.” He said he was trying to be faithful to Jim Morrison and to director Oliver Stone, whom he called “amazing and amazingly tough,” while singing all the songs live. Kilmer described giving himself little time to “be me.”

That is Kilmer’s retrospective account of why people may have read his intensity as difficulty; it does not independently establish what happened between him and colleagues on set. The Guardian situated the label in the mid-1990s, as Kilmer rose to major stardom through The Doors, Tombstone and Batman Forever, and connected it to reported altercations and mood swings. Kilmer said the rumors were unfounded.
How his approach collided with Hollywood expectations
Kilmer offered another explanation in a 2004 Guardian interview: people sometimes identify actors with the difficult characters they play. He also said he was focused on acting rather than socializing with financiers. Stone, he recalled, had warned him that such socializing mattered in the industry. Kilmer rejected the idea that he was a spoiled star, saying he did not care about the size of his trailer.

These comments describe Kilmer’s view of the gap between his priorities and Hollywood’s social expectations. They help explain how he understood the reputation, but do not prove that this was the sole reason colleagues criticized him.
Batman Forever: a reported clash and a confining suit
Director Joel Schumacher described Kilmer as difficult, according to the Associated Press’s 2025 retrospective. The AP also recounts Kilmer’s description in the 2021 documentary Val of the Batman suit: it restricted his movement and hearing and left him feeling isolated on set.
The suit offers context for Kilmer’s experience of the role, not a resolution of the reported dispute with Schumacher. The two points should not be collapsed into a claim that the costume caused the conflict—or that one account disproves the other.
The Island of Dr. Moreau: the most prominent flashpoint
The production of The Island of Dr. Moreau became notorious for turmoil, including the replacement of original director Richard Stanley by John Frankenheimer. The AP’s 2025 account describes a set disrupted by a hurricane and extensive rewrites by Kilmer and Marlon Brando; it also reports critical remarks attributed to Frankenheimer. Kilmer, in turn, described sadness on the set in his memoir.
The documentary Val revisits the production’s frustration and personality conflicts. In the Los Angeles Times’ 2021 coverage, director Leo Scott said the aim was to show the difficult moments as Kilmer experienced them, “rather than try and make a comment or editorialize on if there was anyone to blame.” That framing offers Kilmer’s perspective; it does not independently settle competing accounts.
What Kilmer disputed
In a 2004 Total Film interview, Kilmer pushed back against several stories. He said he and Brando had been friends, that he got along with the crew, and that reports he had set a crew member on fire were untrue. He also said he went to the set on days when he was not called in, hoping to improve the film. Kilmer said the press stories had hurt him personally and professionally. These are his statements, not independent verification of the events.

How Kilmer later understood the label
In his 2020 memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, Kilmer acknowledged that his effort to serve a project’s artistic aims had alienated powerful people. As quoted in the AP retrospective, he wrote: “In an unflinching attempt to empower directors, actors and other collaborators to honor the truth and essence of each project, an attempt to breathe Suzukian life into a myriad Hollywood moments, I had been deemed difficult and alienated the head of every major studio.”
In Val, he reflected on the cost of believing that the work itself would overcome the reputation. The Los Angeles Times quoted him saying: “I thought, naively, that the quality of the work would outweigh the perception of me being difficult. One can only hope, but it is the hope that ‘kills’ you.” Together, these retrospective accounts show how Kilmer came to view the label, but do not adjudicate every disputed story from the productions.
Quick Recap
What the record supports—and what it does not
- Kilmer’s explanation: He traced the label back to the immersive work on The Doors and to a mismatch between his focus on acting and Hollywood’s expectations.
- Others’ criticism: Reported conflict on Batman Forever and especially The Island of Dr. Moreau helped attach the reputation to particular productions; Schumacher’s criticism is reported by the AP.
- His response: Kilmer rejected significant Moreau anecdotes and said the coverage harmed him.
- The limit: Retrospective interviews, memoir and documentary testimony clarify how participants understood events, but the available accounts do not establish the truth of every anecdote or quantify how much any one factor contributed to the reputation.
