Under Paris ranks No. 2 on Netflix’s all-time global non-English film chart, even though its Rotten Tomatoes audience score was 30% when the page was accessed. The apparent mismatch is straightforward: Netflix’s chart counts viewing during a set launch window, while Rotten Tomatoes reports ratings submitted by a smaller group of users. Neither figure measures the same thing, and “viewer hate” overstates what the available evidence shows.
What Netflix’s all-time ranking measures
Netflix’s current global all-time chart places Under Paris at No. 2 among non-English films, behind Troll. The chart lists 102.3 million views and 177.3 million hours viewed. Netflix defines the all-time ranking by total views during each title’s first 91 days on the service; it is not a current weekly position or an approval score. Netflix’s all-time non-English film chart reports the platform’s own viewing data.

Netflix calculates a view by dividing hours viewed by a title’s runtime. That approach lets the company compare titles of different lengths, but it remains a platform-defined measure of watching, not an independent assessment of quality. Netflix’s explanation of its lists cautions, “There is no one perfect streaming metric.” Netflix’s explanation of its viewing metrics describes the company’s approach and its 91-day all-time window.
How the launch-week number fits
Netflix reported that Under Paris debuted at No. 1 on its global Non-English Films weekly list, with 40.9 million views for the week of June 3, 2024. That debut-week figure and the 102.3 million all-time-chart figure refer to different periods: the first captures one week, while the latter totals views within the first 91 days. They should not be added together or treated as competing estimates. Netflix’s June 11, 2024 report on the debut gives the weekly result.

What the Rotten Tomatoes score says—and does not say
When accessed, Rotten Tomatoes showed a 63% Tomatometer from 41 critic reviews and a 30% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 audience ratings. Those are mutable snapshots of submitted reviews and ratings on that service, not a poll of everyone who watched the film on Netflix. A 30% audience score indicates weak approval among the users represented in that rating aggregate; it does not establish that Netflix viewers generally hated the film. Rotten Tomatoes’ Under Paris page displays the current aggregates.
The measures differ in what they count, when they count it, and whose behavior they represent:
Rank #2
| Measure | What it counts | Time frame and population |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix all-time chart | Views, calculated by Netflix from hours watched divided by runtime | Total views in the title’s first 91 days on Netflix; platform viewing data |
| Rotten Tomatoes audience score | Positive audience ratings submitted to Rotten Tomatoes | Current aggregate when accessed; users who rated the title, not all Netflix viewers |
A high number of people watching and a low share of submitted ratings being positive can coexist. A view says that a title was watched under Netflix’s counting method; it does not say why someone chose it, whether they finished it, or whether they liked it. Netflix itself says views and total hours viewed are its chosen ways to compare popularity, not a complete account of a title’s reception.
What viewers were choosing to watch
Under Paris is a French creature thriller directed by Xavier Gens. Netflix’s premise places a large shark in the Seine as Paris prepares to host the World Triathlon Championships; scientist Sophia, activist Mika, and river-police commander Adil try to prevent a catastrophe. The cast includes Bérénice Bejo, Nassim Lyes, and Léa Léviant. Netflix lists the film’s release date as June 5, 2024, and categorizes it as a thriller, horror film, and creature feature. Netflix Media Center’s film listing gives the release and premise; Netflix Tudum’s cast guide identifies the director and cast.

Its premise and genre make clear why it can attract curiosity and viewing without guaranteeing broad approval. The chart establishes that the film drew substantial Netflix viewing during its qualifying window. The Rotten Tomatoes snapshot establishes that its audience score was low on that aggregator. Neither source explains individual viewers’ motives, and together they do not support a representative verdict from everyone who watched.
