Scenes in Star Wars Outlaws take shape through a mix of visual research, worldbuilding, narrative development and coordination across disciplines. Ubisoft’s public accounts explain those creative connections—but they do not lay out a complete technical, step-by-step pipeline for building an individual scene.
Start with the visual language of Star Wars
For the art team, scene-making began with studying the breadth of Star Wars. Benedikt Podlesnigg, Ubisoft’s Art and World Director, described revisiting films and shows, reading books and comics, playing games and even building model kits. The aim was to explore the galaxy’s visual identity and use that knowledge to inform concepts, characters, props and environments. (Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws Art Blast, October 2, 2024.)
That research served a design goal, not a rule that each scene should recreate a familiar movie image. Podlesnigg said the team wanted longtime fans to notice references and details while keeping the world legible to newcomers. The resulting balance is homage with room for a distinct presentation: the familiar visual identity of Star Wars, shaped for a new open-world adventure.
Let the story determine what a scene needs to do
Star Wars Outlaws is set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, according to Ubisoft’s official FAQ. Narrative Director Navid Khavari described the central aspiration as letting players live a scoundrel fantasy: moving through bustling places, travelling by speeder and venturing into space. That premise gives scenes a shared dramatic purpose: they should support the life of a character navigating the galaxy’s underworld, rather than feel like disconnected backdrops.

The world combines established places such as Tatooine and Kijimi with Toshara, a new moon, and its underworld city, Mirogana. A scene in a known location can draw on an existing Star Wars context; a newly created place must establish its own identity while still feeling as though it belongs in that universe. Khavari discussed the game’s story and cross-disciplinary work in a Ubisoft Toronto interview published September 3, 2024.
Use story rooms to align writing, quests and visuals
Khavari said the narrative team used ongoing “story rooms,” bringing writers and narrative designers together and involving quest designers and artists. The goal was to keep quests, dialogue, cinematics and character biographies aligned. As he put it, “In an open-world game, collaboration across these various fields is crucial.”

That account shows how a scene’s story context connects to work beyond the writing team. Narrative decisions need to make sense alongside the quest and the visual world, so contributors can work toward a consistent version of the characters and events. It does not, however, describe a fixed sequence of production steps or establish that every scene was made in the same way.
Coordinate the work across teams
Production Manager Keegan Hawkeswood described coordinating narrative tasks and dependencies with voice designers, quest and level designers, and cinematic teams. His account points to a practical challenge in collaborative production: work by one group may depend on decisions or deliverables from another, so those connections have to be managed. It is evidence of coordination across contributors, not a claim that Ubisoft Toronto alone created all scenes or assets. The broader development context also includes Massive Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games. In an April 16, 2024 Ubisoft News article about Ubisoft’s collaboration with NVIDIA, Massive Technical Director Tobias Carlsson described worldbuilding as part of Massive’s DNA. Ubisoft’s public statements establish that worldbuilding and cross-team collaboration matter, but they do not assign every scene or production task to a particular studio.

Together, the accounts offer a credible high-level view: art research informs visual choices; the game’s scoundrel premise and setting give scenes narrative direction; story rooms align narrative with quests and art; and production coordination connects teams whose work depends on one another.

They do not explain how a specific scene is modeled, laid out, lit, integrated into the game engine or implemented. They also do not provide a count of artists, references, work hours or scenes. Without those details, it would be misleading to present a software-specific or frame-by-frame workflow as though the developers had publicly described it.
