The ending does not change how Aaron Hernandez died: he died by suicide in prison in 2017, aged 27. Instead, the finale imagines an intimate confrontation with his father, then cuts to children playing football to show the sport—and public attention—moving on. It offers no provable single cause for his death.
What does the ending of American Sports Story mean?
The imagined conversation in prison
In “Who Killed Aaron Hernandez?,” the finale returns to Hernandez’s final days in prison. In its imagined closing prison scene, he is high and hallucinates a conversation with his deceased father. The exchange gives the character a moment to confront his actions and consider regret. Actor Josh Andrés Rivera and series developer Stu Zicherman described it as a way to put Hernandez’s defenses aside and have him look at himself. It is a dramatic interpretation, not a documented account of Hernandez’s thoughts or final hours. Rivera and Zicherman explain the scene to TheWrap.
The children playing football
After the prison sequence, the show cuts to Shayanna watching children play football. Her expression shifts as she thinks about Aaron. Zicherman said the image was meant to show that “the game continues to go on,” while people like Hernandez can be forgotten. Football’s ordinary appeal carries on alongside the violence and loss the series has just shown. Zicherman discusses the ending with TheWrap.
The final sports-commentator montage
The closing montage uses real commentators’ voices to leave the debate over football’s dangers unresolved. Zicherman told TheWrap: “We’re addicted to this game. We’re going to keep watching it no matter what.” The montage is not a verdict that football alone explains Hernandez’s life or death; it points to the ongoing tension between the sport’s popularity and its risks. TheWrap’s interview gives the creator’s explanation.

Did the finale change Aaron Hernandez’s fate?
No. The historical endpoint remains that Hernandez died by suicide in prison in 2017, aged 27, while serving a life sentence after his conviction for Odin Lloyd’s murder. A postmortem examination found severe chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The Boston Globe’s finale recap describes the show’s brain examination as an approximate depiction of the real postmortem examination; the Associated Press overview also summarizes the series and Hernandez’s story.
What the series changes is how viewers encounter the final hours. Rather than recreate the disturbing drawings and references reportedly found in Hernandez’s cell, it invents the private exchange with his father. Zicherman framed the creative question as whether Hernandez could look at himself, consider that he had committed the acts, and express regret. That scene supplies emotional closure for the drama, not evidence of a real final realization. TheWrap interview with Rivera and Zicherman.

Who killed Aaron Hernandez—and does the finale explain why he died?
The title asks “Who Killed Aaron Hernandez?,” but the episode does not establish a reliable single-person or single-factor explanation for his suicide. The Boston Globe reads the drama as suggesting that public speculation about Hernandez’s sexuality contributed to humiliation, while also placing CTE and other pressures in the story. That is an interpretation of the show, not proof of what caused his death. The available historical evidence cited here does not establish sexuality speculation, CTE, prison, drugs, childhood experiences, or any one event as the cause.
CTE matters as context for the finale’s questions about football and brain injury: the real postmortem examination found severe disease. But that finding does not excuse murder, establish a causal chain from football to Hernandez’s crimes, or prove why he died. Zicherman said the brain-injury discussion became a debate, while the show was less ambiguous about the crimes it portrayed. TheWrap interview with Zicherman.
