Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Bush say becoming mothers has given them even more to talk about, while the closeness they have shared as twin sisters has remained a constant. Between them, they are raising five children: Jenna has three, and Barbara has two.
Motherhood added a new subject to a lifelong conversation
In an interview published by Us Weekly on March 27, 2025, Jenna described the sisters’ relationship after having children as close to what it had been before. “Our relationship has stayed somewhat the same, which is that we’re just really, really close,” she said. Motherhood, she explained, has given them another part of life to share rather than replacing their familiar bond.
That shared experience sits alongside their different family stages. Jenna is a mother of three, while Barbara is a mother of two, according to PEOPLE’s March 2025 coverage. Their conversations about parenting are personal reflections from two sisters raising their own families—not a claim that there is one right way to parent.
The cousins share time across the two households
The sisters’ closeness also shows up in time spent together as a family. Barbara told Us Weekly that Jenna’s daughters Mila and Poppy had a sleepover at her house and helped with her baby. “Now that I’ve had kids, they’ve had a slumber party at my house, Mila and Poppy, and [have] helped me with my baby,” she said.

Those everyday connections let the children spend time together as cousins and give Jenna’s daughters a role in Barbara’s family life. In PEOPLE’s March 2025 coverage, Jenna also described Barbara as creative, fun, and present with her children. The portrait is of relatives sharing ordinary family moments, not of one household directing the other’s parenting.
They are trying to notice the small moments
Barbara has spoken about how quickly a child’s needs can change. In the interview syndicated by PEOPLE, she recalled telling her husband that morning: “I was just telling my husband this morning, I know at some point [Cora Georgia and Edward] aren’t going to need me in this way, and I don’t want to miss it.” The remark puts her focus on being attentive to the stage of parenthood she is living now.
Jenna described a related choice: trying to see the world from a child’s point of view and make room for presence, fun, and joy. “And so, we just realized we have choices as parents and we can choose to see the world through our kids’ eyes and be present and have fun and be joyful, or we can make other choices,” she told Us Weekly. These are the sisters’ own ways of describing what they value; they do not establish a universal formula for family life.
I Loved You First brings those reflections into a children’s book
Their joint book, I Loved You First, is connected to the sisters’ conversations about parenthood and family history. Jenna described its theme as “opening our eyes, choosing joy [and] finding the beauty and inspiration that our kids provide.” She also said, “Our shared history makes us brave.” The sisters dedicated the book to their parents, George W. Bush and Laura Bush.

For Jenna, the book’s ideas include being present and trying to notice what children see. For Barbara, the reflections on parenthood include appreciating the small moments with her daughter. I Loved You First follows an earlier collaboration, The Superpower Sisterhood, a children’s book about sisterhood and chosen family. In an Entertainment Tonight interview from April 2022, Jenna and Barbara discussed mutual support and the meaning of sisterhood. Their newer book turns more directly toward parenthood, but both projects draw on a relationship that has shaped their lives together.
