Start with a clear promise to the reader, select and reorder the posts that deliver it, then edit, connect, fact-check and format the material as a manuscript. That approach is more useful than simply bundling everything you have published.
What makes a blog archive work as a book?
A blog is usually organized for browsing: each post needs to stand on its own, and posts may repeat explanations, refer to events that have passed, or assume the reader has visited an earlier page. A book asks for a more deliberate progression. Its chapters should build toward an outcome for a particular reader.
Write a one-sentence promise before selecting posts. Name both the intended reader and what they will understand or be able to do by the end. Use that sentence to judge every candidate post. Existing categories or a series can suggest chapter groupings, but they are not automatically a book structure.
How do you collect and choose the posts?
Gather the archive
Export your posts or collect them in a working document. A workflow guide updated September 25, 2026, lists these routes: WordPress Tools → Export, Substack Settings → Exports, and Medium Settings → Download your information. Menus may change, so check the platform’s current interface. An export is a backup and source material, not a finished manuscript; you still need to assemble selected posts in your chosen order.

Keep each post’s original URL and publication date beside the working text. They make it easier to trace claims, update time-sensitive information and preserve attribution while editing.
Curate against the promise
Review relevant posts and, if available, readership or engagement information. Set aside posts that do not advance the book’s promise, including announcements, aged news reactions and explanations that duplicate stronger material. Do not treat popularity or publication order as a substitute for fit.
A Lulu example illustrates the scale of curation, not a standard: its author removed 14 candidate posts and retained 22 for a working document. The same example says the resulting book incorporated elements from 17 posts. Those figures describe one project only.

How should you order the chapters?
Group related posts, then arrange them in the sequence that best helps the reader. Publication order is rarely the only or best option.

- Memoir or project diary: chronology may help readers follow events and change.
- Question-led book: arrange chapters around the questions readers need answered, in a useful progression.
Once the sequence is clear, note what a reader needs to know between posts. Those gaps point to context, explanations and transitions you will need to write.
What editing turns posts into chapters?
Copy only the selected material into the manuscript. Then revise it as a whole rather than treating each post as untouchable.

- Cut blog-specific openings, repeated calls to action and references that make sense only on the website.
- Remove duplicated explanations and dated material; update facts and links that may have changed.
- Harmonize tone and terminology across posts, and add context where a chapter assumes knowledge from another page.
- Write transitions, a book introduction and a conclusion so the chapters form a continuous reading experience.
- Check that the opening’s promises are fulfilled by the chapters that follow.
Repurposing saves you from starting with a blank page, but it does not remove the need for new writing. In the Lulu example, the author edited the selected material and added new writing. Lulu also says that single compilation took less than two weeks; that is an example, not a typical timetable or a guarantee.
What rights and privacy checks should you make?
Owning the words you wrote does not automatically give you permission to reuse everything included in a post. Before publication, review the material you plan to carry over.
- Check the license or permission for every image; replace images when reuse rights are uncertain.
- Review embedded social posts, screenshots and substantial quotations for rights and attribution needs.
- Consider whether identifiable people, names or personal details should remain in the book.
- Preserve required credits and permissions in the manuscript.
Existing posts may generally remain online, according to the cited workflow guide, but Amazon KDP Select requires ebook exclusivity. Check KDP’s current terms before deciding whether to enroll or distribute the ebook elsewhere.

How do you format and check an ebook?
For a text-heavy ebook, choose a reflowable format where your publishing route supports it. Reflowable text lets readers resize type. Amazon KDP says its reflowable formats work across Kindle devices and apps and support more accessibility features than its fixed-layout Print Replica option. Give chapters semantic headings so the ebook can generate a working table of contents.
Use Print Replica only when preserving an exact, print-like page layout is essential. KDP says it does not allow readers to resize text and is available only on some devices.
After conversion or upload, preview the book at different screen sizes. Check chapter navigation, images, tables, links and lists for readability and function. KDP describes Kindle Create, manuscript templates and Kindle Previewer as preparation and review tools; confirm current file support and instructions before beginning.

What changes for a print edition?
Print production adds physical page and cover requirements that an ebook does not have. Choose a trim size and binding, then use the selected service’s current specifications and templates. Depending on the project, the interior and cover may need correct margins, bleed, spine width and a cover PDF sized to the final page count and binding.
Inspect the exported print PDF before release. Lulu recommends checking that fonts are embedded and reviewing image warnings in its print workflow. Use the printer’s preview or proof process to catch layout problems in the actual production setup. Lulu provides templates and guides; KDP provides manuscript templates and preview tools.
Which publishing route fits the project?
Both Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and Lulu describe ebook and print options, but their formats, preparation tools and distribution conditions differ. Eligibility and availability can depend on the project and current platform rules, so confirm them before choosing.

Choose by weighing audience, desired formats, distribution, file requirements, accessibility and how much manual layout work you can take on. Neither route can promise a particular sales result. Amazon describes KDP as a way to publish and sell a book around the world on Amazon; that is the platform’s own description, not an independent sales finding.
