The clearest comics-based route for Tommy Maximoff to return is reincarnation: his consciousness could survive the Hex and enter another body, as Billy’s did. That possibility now has an on-screen lead. As of October 8, 2026, a report identifies Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Shepherd in the upcoming VisionQuest, whose synopsis describes a mysterious boy named Thomas Shepard who may be Vision’s son reincarnate. The series was scheduled to premiere October 14, 2026; its story and the exact meaning of “reincarnate” are not yet confirmed.
How Tommy returned in the comics
Marvel’s comics give the twins a clear path back after their brief magical existence: they are reincarnated as Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd, then eventually reconnect as the young heroes Wiccan and Speed. Marvel’s official reading guide identifies Vision and the Scarlet Witch (1985) #12 as the twins’ first appearance and points to later stories about their identities and reunion. In the Young Avengers story, Tommy’s introduction comes through a rescue rather than Wanda simply summoning him. The team frees him from detention after a destructive incident involving his powers, and they recognize his resemblance to Wiccan. Marvel describes Thomas as having super-speed similar to Pietro Maximoff’s. Those details offer adaptable story beats, not a guarantee that the MCU will repeat the same events. What the MCU has established
Agatha All Along reveals that Billy survived the Hex’s collapse when his soul entered William Kaplan’s body as William died in a car crash. Billy later sets out to find Tommy and can sense that his twin exists, but he cannot locate him. This gives the MCU an established precedent for a soul surviving the loss of the Hex-born body, without confirming that Tommy’s story will follow exactly the same mechanics. Why VisionQuest changes the picture
A GamesRadar+ report identifies Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Shepherd and quotes the official Disney+ synopsis for VisionQuest. In the synopsis, a rebooted Vision goes on the run after a bounty is placed on him, accompanied by “Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son reincarnate.” The series was scheduled to premiere October 14, 2026, after the October 8, 2026 reporting date. GamesRadar+’s VisionQuest report.
The synopsis makes reincarnation and Vision’s connection to the boy central possibilities, but its wording is deliberately uncertain. It does not establish the supernatural mechanism, confirm that Thomas is the same person as the comics’ Tommy Shepherd in every respect, or say that he will use the Speed name or have super-speed.
Three comics-based ways the story could unfold
| Possible route | What supports it | What remains open |
|---|---|---|
| Tommy’s consciousness enters another body | The comics reincarnate both twins, and the MCU has already shown Billy’s soul entering William Kaplan’s body. | The MCU has not confirmed Tommy’s mechanism or destination. |
| Vision leads Billy to Tommy | The reported VisionQuest synopsis places Thomas Shepard alongside Vision and says he may be Vision’s son reincarnate. | The nature of their relationship and how it works are not confirmed by the synopsis. |
| Billy discovers or rescues Tommy | The Young Avengers comics introduce Tommy through a detention-and-rescue story. | There is no confirmation that the MCU will use detention, a rescue, or the same trigger for Tommy’s powers. |
A broader Young Avengers reunion is another possible framework: in the comics, Billy and Tommy reconnect within a young-hero team. But no specific MCU team formation or recruitment plot follows from the evidence above.
How to read the names and unanswered questions
The comics character is generally called Tommy Shepherd; the reported VisionQuest synopsis spells the boy’s name “Thomas Shepard.” The similar names point toward a connection, but they should not be treated as proof of every comic detail. Until the series establishes more, Tommy’s powers, superhero identity, reunion with Billy, and precise relationship to Vision remain open.

Where to start with the comics
For Tommy’s rescue and his connection to Wiccan, start with Young Avengers (2005) #1 and #10–11. Marvel’s reading guide also lists Young Avengers Presents (2008) #3 and Avengers: The Children’s Crusade (2010) #1 as relevant follow-ups. To begin with the twins’ earlier story, the guide points to Vision and the Scarlet Witch (1985) #12. These are issue recommendations; the guide does not establish current collected-edition availability.
